The Old Village Post House, 101 Pitt St. in Mount Pleasant, is hosting its annual Crab and Wine Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22-23. Chefs Frank Lee and Forrest Parker will prepare a four-course dinner featuring avocado-Alabama jumbo lump crab salad, Singapore Jonah crab, and carved filet of beef with gruyere-lump crab imperial. Charleston’s neighborhood butcher shop and gourmet market, Ted’s Butcherblock, welcomed Brian Parkhurst to the team as chef. Parkhurst is responsible for managing the kitchen, planning catering and special event menus, and crafting dishes for Ted’s daily menus. Originally from Illinois, Parkhurst moved to Charleston to attend Johnson & Wales University. He began his Charleston professional cooking career in 2001 with a three-year stint at Peninsula Grill. Parkhurst has also worked at Mercato, Al di La, Fulton Five, and, most recently, as sous chef at Cru Catering.


Vegstock returns to Charleston Grill Aug. 15-16 as Executive Chef Michele Weaver turns the spotlight on cooking with vegetables. The three-course menu, paired with wine , includes spinach and plum salad with Yuzu-Shiso vinaigrette, grits souffle pudding with roasted figs, and pistachio cream and fig honey sorbet. Dinner is $75 per person, and includes a reception tasting of eight wines and special appetizers. For reservations, call 843-577-4522.


Charleston Chief of Police Gregory C. Mullen is the featured speaker for the monthly Small Business Lunch at Halls Aug. 16. Mullen has served as chief since 2006. Each month, Small Business Lunch at Halls features a distinguished speaker from the business, civic or political arenas upstairs at Halls Chophouse, with a three-course meal prepared by Executive Chef Matthew Niessner.

Tickets are $28 per person for the luncheon and parking. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served at noon. Seating is limited; visit www.smallbusinesslunchathalls.com for ticket information. Halls Chophouse is located at 434 King St., Charleston.


The Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic is hosting the sixth annual Lowcountry Wine & Beer Festival and Silent Auction at Freshfields Village Sept. 2. The festival will feature wine, craft beer, a buffet and live music by Lilly B’. The event is 4-7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance; $40 at the gate.
