Streit USA Armoring presented a $5,000 check to the American Red Cross in support of Red Cross programs and services provided to the Lowcountry community. Streit USA Armoring manufactures armored vehicles for military, law enforcement and commercial customers.
Westbrook Brewing, 510 Ridge Road in Mount Pleasant, will host a cupcake and beer pairing. Tickets are $5 per person and proceeds benefit Wings for Kids. The event is 5:30-7 p.m. today.
The event will feature four pairings from Cupcake:
- White Thai beer with a white Thai cupcake and spice icing.
- Gratzer beer with a maple bacon cupcake.
- Vanilla tree beer with bourbon pecan pie cupcake.
- Amarillo armadillo beer with a peaches and cream cupcake.
Wings for Kids is a nonprofit teaching social emotional learning in an after-school program.

The Charleston Chapter of Credit Unions raised more than $2,700 and collected school supplies and clothes during a back-to-school drive benefiting Lowcountry Orphan Relief. In June, Charleston area credit union branches served as collection sites for supplies donated from credit union members and employees.
The Charleston Chapter of Credit Unions hosted their quarterly meeting for credit union employees at the Charleston Battery game at Blackbaud Stadium on July 19. Employees participated in raffle-style events, again raising money for Lowcountry Orphan Relief. Lowcountry Orphan Relief is a nonprofit organization that provides goods and services to children who have been abused or neglected in the tri-county area.
Tim Walter, president of Support Breath of Life Inc., recently presented the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center with a check for $22,238 from the first Breath of Life Fashion Show Fundraiser. Sen. Ernest “Fritz” Hollings accepted the donation.
The fundraiser on June 29 was a celebration of the life of Darlene Westbury Walter, a Mount Pleasant native and model who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2010 at age 51. The money raised at the event will go toward funding lung cancer research at Hollings Cancer Center.
The American Cancer Society is hosting its first Charleston cupcake competition on Aug. 19. “Cupcakes vs. Cancer” welcomes all bakers of Charleston to cook-off to fight cancer. The event is 2-5 p.m. at The Courtyard Marriott, 125 Calhoun St., in downtown Charleston. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
The event features three categories: professionals, amateurs and youth bakers and various categories within each group. Cost is $15 for youth, $30 for amateur adults and $50 for professional bakers. Event tickets are $15 and include five cupcake coupons to purchase cupcakes, decorate your own or for to-go boxes.
