Helping Out for July 25, 2012

Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. Submissions should be sent to dailyjournal@scbiznews.com.

To support North Charleston’s World Series Dixie Majors baseball team, a luncheon fundraiser will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Felix C. Davis Community Center, 4800 Park Circle, North Charleston. All lunch proceeds will assist the team in travel expenses to the tournament. The North Charleston Recreation Department will be serving up lunch, sponsored by Cheerwine, of hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken with a $5 donation requested.

The North Charleston team went undefeated to win the South Carolina State Championship in Lancaster over the July 14 weekend, advancing to the Dixie Majors World Series Tournament. The tournament will be played at Legion Field in Laurel, Miss. The North Charleston Majors team, ages 17 to 19, will take on the Alabama State Champions in its opener at 1 p.m. July 28.

Local Charleston artists will join forces to raise money for the Lowcountry Food Bank at the Food for the Soul event hosted by Earth Fare this Saturday. Paintings, drawings, photography and pastels by local artists will be available for purchase, with a portion of proceeds donated to the food bank. Homestead Lemonade and food samples by Earth Fare will be available. The event is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside of Earth Fare in Windermere Plaza, 74 Folly Road, Charleston. Two sets of week-long passes for the PGA tournament at Kiawah Island Golf Resort will be up for grabs via blind bid auction.
