Blue Planet Green Events, in partnership with MIX Premier Bartending, has launched an eco-initiative to further support Pet Helpers. The two organizations will collect aluminum cans at events and recycle them for cash that will be used to purchase food for Lowcountry animals in need.
A volunteer with Pet Helpers has already raised enough money to purchase 1,500 cans of pet food this year by turning cans into cash. BPGE and MIX hope to at least double this effort by the end of the year as well as inspire others within the business community to join this initiative. The Charleston RiverDogs, along with the New York Yankees and all their affiliated minor league teams, recently received a citation from the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The citation was presented to the RiverDogs for making a difference through volunteer service. The awards are bestowed by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation in conjunction with the Corporation for National and Community Service.
During HOPE Week, the RiverDogs visited several organizations around the Lowcountry. The team and other staff spent time volunteering at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, Lifepoint/SC Donate Life, Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding, Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina and the American Lung Association.
The 10th annual First Day Festival is 1-4 p.m. Aug. 19 at Liberty Square at the South Carolina Aquarium and Charleston Maritime Center. The event provides local children with the supplies needed to start a new school year. Businesses are encouraged to organize a drive and collect school supplies through Aug. 10. The event is hosted by the city of Charleston and expects to pack 7,000 backpacks for Charleston County students. Learn more about how to get involved.
Every year, HALOS participates in the annual IOP Connector Run/Walk for the Child, a fundraising event sponsored by the Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant exchange clubs. All proceeds support HALOS and other local nonprofits that focus on improving the lives of those affected by child abuse and neglect. In preparation for the October race, community partners are teaming up to “Bag For Bucks” at local Bi-Lo stores to raise funds. Bi-Lo is the title sponsor of the event and has pledged to match all tips raised. Events are at Bi-Lo stores in Mount Pleasant and Summerville. Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. on select dates in July, August and September. The Center for Women is hosting a Job Help Drop In from 4 to 6 p.m. July 18 at its facility, 129 Cannon St., Charleston. Bring your questions and your resume to receive advice from job coaches Pat Eardly, HR adviser, and Jan Moorman, vice president of Career Management Partners. Pay $10 at the door.
Join the Center for Women and Skirt in celebrating women’s right to vote at The Women’s Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 26 at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant. Enjoy food, wine and music by the Local Honeys, have your picture taken in the photo booth and win door prizes. Attendees will be able to register to vote or update their existing voter registration on-site while meeting local women who are running for or who currently hold elected office. This event is a fundraiser for the Women’s Leadership Institute, a Center for Women monthly program series. Tickets are $20 before Aug. 23; $30 at the door, if available.
Charleston Young Professionals, an initiative of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, is helping tackle literacy in 2012. CYP is launching a Tower of Success Book Drive to benefit the Charleston metro area by collecting books for elementary age children. Donate new or gently used children’s books during the campaign, which wraps up in early September.
Local businesses will serve as donation drop-off points: all CresCom Bank locations in Charleston, Morris Financial Concepts Inc., Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Buist, Byars & Taylor LLC, Ramsdale Law Firm, Center for Women, Charleston Southern University, Sparc, and Holiday Inn and Suites in North Charleston. The books will be distributed to local schools and organizations that support the advancement of literacy rates in the Charleston region including Charleston Volunteers for Literacy, Teachers Supply Closet, Be a Mentor Charleston, Bridge of Hope and Metanoia.
