Charleston Grill is hosting the second installment in its Charleston Grill Wine Region Series at 6:30 p.m. May 8 with wine from Umbria, Italy, which is the home region of Spoleto. Executive chef Michelle Weaver and sommelier Rick Rubel will treat guests with the flavors of wine and food from the Umbria region, starting the evening with a tasting reception of wines and hors d’oeuvres in the Palmetto Courtyard. Afterward, there will be a three-course dinner with wine pairings in the Vintner's Room at the Charleston Grill. Cost is $75, plus tax and gratuity. College of Charleston chef Tonya Mitchell is recognized as one of the top Aramark chefs in the Southeast. Mitchell, who primarily works in The City Bistro, placed second at the Southeast Regional Aramark Culinary Excellence competition April 5. The ACE Program recognizes outstanding chefs throughout Aramark higher education accounts and provides the opportunity for the chefs to demonstrate their culinary abilities in a competitive dining environment.
Mitchell is one of more than 150 Aramark chefs from colleges, universities and conference centers across North America who will compete in the 2012 Aramark Culinary Excellence program for the chance to win the coveted “Copper Pot” at the Aramark Culinary Excellence National Challenge, the culmination of the ACE program.
Lowcountry Local First's fifth annual Chef's Potluck is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Middleton Place. The event celebrates local food and the growers, chefs and producers who make it available in Charleston. Enjoy food, drink and a live and silent auction. Tickets are $75 at the door.
The fourth annual All-Americana Crawfish Boil is May 6 at Home Team BBQ, 1205 Ashley River Road in Charleston. There will be music from 2 to 10 p.m., featuring such bands as L Shape Lot, Guilt Ridden Troubadour and John Wesley Satterfield & His Damn Fine Band. Admission is $10 and includes one free plate of crawfish; additional plates are $5 each.
Poogan’s Porch has promoted Terell Ham from assistant general manager to general manager. Ham has been at Poogan’s Porch since August 2010. He previously worked as food and beverage manager of Pavilion Bar and Grille 225, both located in Market Pavilion Hotel, and as hotel room coordinator of Charleston Marriott.
