This weekend’s Lowcountry Oyster Festival will support five local charities. The 29th annual festival is 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Ronald McDonald House, Hollings Cancer Center, Hospitality Heroes, Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Charleston Science Materials Resource Center. Tickets are $12 in advance; $15 at the door; no charge for children 10 and under.
Volunteers are needed for the annual Forest Cleanup on Feb. 4. Meet at the U.S. Forest Service office, 2967 Steed Creek Road in Awendaw by 8 a.m. Volunteers will pick up litter and all supplies will be provided. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s seventh annual Leukemia Ball is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Omar Shrine Auditorium, 176 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant. Enjoy music by local pianist Steve Jacobs and 7 Ounce Band, as well as food, a full bar, and live and silent auctions. This event highlights the progress being made to find a cure for blood cancer. Free tax service is available to tri-county families earning less than $52,000, thanks to a collaboration among Trident United Way, Trident Urban League and the IRS. Families may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, worth as much as $5,000. The Ashley Ridge High School Athletic Boosters is hosting a 5K Fox Trot on Feb. 4 to benefit the athletic teams and the Summerville Miracle League. Registration and packet pickup is 6:30-7:30 a.m. at Ashley Ridge High School in Summerville, and the race begins at 8 a.m. Early pickup is from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 3 at Inland Surf & Skate, 1103 Bacons Bridge Road in Summerville. College of Charleston Jazz Program is hosting a jazz fundraising concert at 8 p.m. today in the Recital Hall in the Simons Center for the Arts, 54 Saint Philip St. Jazz combos and the faculty jazz ensemble will perform. Each Friday in January, the Charleston Crab House has been hosting an all-you-can-eat oyster roast for local organizations. So far the event has raised money for Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, James Island Charter High School Band and Lowcountry Local First. This week’s event will raise money for Andy Petit, the kitchen supervisor at Charleston Crab House who was recently injured in a car accident. Petit is at the Medical University of South Carolina, and his lower body is paralyzed. Shuckin’ for Andy is $20 per person for oysters and homemade chili from 6-9 p.m. Friday on the deck of the Crab House on Wappoo Creek. For more information, call 843-795-1963.
