Weekend! Jan. 5-8

Down the Island and Back Again

Who spent the past month in a state of pure bacchanalia and now has tagged "Make a concerted effort to drop a few pounds" as New Year’s Resolution No. 1? Certainly not us... Board the Island Cat Ferry to Bulls Island and take a 12-mile hike around the island, checking out Prices’ Inlet, Boneyard beach and the Old Fortress along the way. Off to a strong start! Walk there from home or ride your bike, 10 bonus points.
WHO: Sewee Visitor & Environmental Center; Bob Raynor leads the walk
WHEN: 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday
WHERE: 5821 U.S. Highway 17 N. in Awendaw

NFL Playoffs

The first week back to work after the holidays is brutal. Makes you want to curl up on the couch, turn on the tube and tune out. Not even enough energy to make a Tebow-ing joke. Somebody order pizza.
WHO: Bengals, Texans, Steelers, Broncos, Lions, Saints, Falcons, Giants
WHEN: Saturday and Sunday
WHERE: Your local living room or sports bar

North Charleston City Gallery Exhibit

In gallery exhibit, eyes watch you. Potentially creepy, and certainly cool. Realist portraits in charcoal and acrylic.
WHO: North Charleston artist-in-residence Lori Starnes Isom
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 31. Opening reception 5 p.m. today
WHERE: North Charleston City Gallery, Charleston Area Convention Center

A Behanding in Spokane

In this comedy, there’s love, hate, desperation and hope. Oh, and one man’s search for his missing hand. Spoiler alert: It’s probably gonna be in the last place he looks.
WHO: Pure Theatre
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday through Feb. 4. Pay-what-you-can at 7:30 tonight
WHERE: Pure Theatre, 477 King St., Charleston

Think Prince and Huey Lewis, accompanied by Pink Floyd and The Pixies, with a Danzig and Def Leppard chaser. Now put it all in one giant 1980s dance pit. Yeah, that sounds about right for a Saturday night.
WHO: As-If
WHEN: 9:30 p.m. Saturday
WHERE: Big Gun Burger Shop, 137 Calhoun St., Charleston

Japanese Fin Art Class

Grab a whole fish (preferably not living and preferably on ice) and your kids and learn the art of Gyotaku, or making prints from fish fins. If you're squeamish, there will be rubber models.
WHO: Charleston Parks Conservancy
WHEN: 10-11 a.m. Friday
WHERE: Bees Landing Recreation Center, 1580 Ashley Garden Blvd.

Miss Representation film screeing

Women aren't generally in positions of power in America. It's just kinda a fact. But who's to blame? This documentary points to mainstream media. We'd like to take offense — but we're not sure we can. Discuss.
WHO: JLV Creative, Re-visionista, Redux, La Wine & Social
WHEN: 5 p.m. Saturday; show at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Redux Studios, 136 St. Philip St., Charleston

Opera at the Library

We promise the tickets to see Handel's Rodelinda are way cheaper at the library than the Met. And you don’t have to get all dressed up and bring those funny little glasses, either. Score.
WHO: Charleston County Public Library
WHEN: 12:30 p.m. Saturday
WHERE: Main Library, 68 Calhoun St., Charleston

Pay What You Can weekend

Need something to do this weekend but broke from the holidays? Visit Patriots Point and the USS Yorktown and pay whatever you've got. Wonder if they accept pocket lint...
WHO: Patriots Point
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
WHERE: Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, Mount Pleasant

A Derby of a Sale

Roller derby girls and good bargains sound like something to get out of bed early for on a Saturday. And much warmer than going yard sale-ing. Plus, proceeds keep the league rolling in 2012.
WHO: Lowcountry Highrollers
WHEN: 7 a.m. to noon Saturday
WHERE: Hot Wheels Skating Center, 1523 Folly Road, Charleston
