North Charleston gave its citizen of the year award to Bill Stanfield for his work as co-founder of a community development organization.
Bill Stanfield |
Stanfield is an associate minister at St. Matthew Baptist Church and co-founder of the Metanoia Community Development Corp.
The corporation has helped implement programs for student leadership, housing development in depressed neighborhoods, minority contractor training and a production kitchen for culinary arts job training. Metanoia is also renovating two buildings on Reynolds Avenue to spark commercial revitalization.
βI met Bill years ago through his work in the community, where he remains a source of encouragement for the Chicora-Cherokee area,β said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey in a news release. βIt is wonderful to have leaders, like Bill, working in concert to improve the quality of life in the southern end of the city. I cannot think of a more deserving individual to receive this honor.β
