The Navy has awarded Detyens Shipyard a $21.5 million contract to repair and upgrade the USNS Arctic, according to a news release from the Department of Defense.

The contract is the second award for Detyens from the DOD this month. The shipyard received a $9.5 million Navy contract earlier to repair the USNS Sacagawea.

The Arctic is one of four fast combat support ship under the Military Sealift Command. The ship carries a crew of 160 civil service mariners and 28 military members.

The North Charleston shipyard will dry-dock the Arctic and is expected to finish the work by Sept. 10, 2012. The contract includes options that could increase its value by a little more than $6 million.

The Navy solicited 50 proposals and received three offers for the contract.
