Rebecca Ufkes, president of UEC Electronics, was honored at the White House last week as a “Champion of Change” for her efforts to create jobs, and save money and energy, through innovation.
UEC Electronics, based in Hanahan, has created an electric power system for troops in Afghanistan that uses alternative energy sources to power laptops, tactical radios, tent lights and battery chargers. The reliance on solar and battery power reduces the need for delivery of diesel fuel, a potentially lifesaving innovation in areas where troops face explosive devices and sniper fire.
The manufacturer has Greens system orders totaling more than $10 million, and 5,000 units are expected to be produced during the next five years.
Ufkes serves as a board member of the S.C. Manufacturing Extension Partnership and is involved in local and state business initiatives.
“SCMEP is proud to be associated with UEC Electronics and Rebecca Ufkes as a board member and client,” partnership president John Irion said in a news release. “Her commitment to commerce in the state of South Carolina is to be commended and celebrated.”
