Weekend! Oct. 6-9

Have you read that one book? No, not that one, the one about the guy and the girl who do that thing together. It's a science-fantasy faux fiction history. It's a best seller. You should look for it at That Big Book Sale.
WHO: Bibliophiles and book aficionados
WHERE: Gaillard Municipal Auditorium
WHEN: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday

Get behind the controls of some cool aircraft while you have the chance. The window of opportunity is about as big as the cockpit window on some of the planes. While you're there, maybe you can battle the Red Baron.
WHO: Patriots Point, wannabe pilots and navigators (and Snoopy?)
WHERE: Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum
WHEN: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday

Moja Arts Festival, part deux

The plethora of African-American and Caribbean arts events wraps up this weekend. Highlights include Philadanco and the festival finale. But wait, there's more — tons more.
WHO: Artists, dancers, poets, musicians, pretty much all the festival types
WHERE: All over the Lowcountry
WHEN: Philadanco is 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday; finale is 4-9:30 p.m. Sunday

We'll use their words: "the charmingly irreverent Tennessee Williams parody For Whom The Southern Belle Tolls, the completely inappropriate Wanda's Visit, and the fabulous freak show that is Nina in the Morning." Sold.
WHO: What If? Productions, performing short plays by Christopher Durang
WHERE: Theatre 99
WHEN: 8 tonight, 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday

It's night, it's the middle of winter, it's Maine. There are 19 people here, and everybody's looking for direction, and everybody's looking for love. The question is just which one they find.
WHO: Writer John Cariani, College of Charleston Theatre Department
WHERE: Emmett Robinson Theatre in the Simons Center for the Arts
WHEN: Runs today through Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., except Sunday at 3 p.m.

Scratch-off tickets are generally supposed to be fun, a lark. But some see them as their only hope for escaping poverty. Who would've thought of lottery ticket as art? We're glad he did — these portraits are haunting.
WHO: "Artistrator" Earl B. Lewis, with some of the kids in the portraits
WHERE: The Wells Gallery, 125 Meeting St.
WHEN: Premieres Friday during the art walk and runs through Oct. 22

The medicine man rolls down King Street touting his quick fix for the economy, the locals win the big showdown, then we all celebrate. Buying local = a raucous good time. Oh, and someone walks on fire.
WHO: Dr. TrickInaBox, Theatre Marvelosa, DJ Cassidy and The Kid
WHERE: Venues all over the Charleston area
WHEN: King Street parade at 6 tonight, street fair at 6:30, show at 7:30

Ring in the cooler weather (it's supposed to be around 80, so it might as well be winter around here) with live music, kids activities, and local crafters, farmers and vendors.
WHO: Musicians, farmers, artists, kids, parents, etc.
WHERE: Freshfields Village
WHEN: 6-9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, 2-7 p.m. Sunday

Gastronomes, this is your weekend. Iron Chef goes local, chefs are paired with artists for gallery appetizers, and the main event is now two days.
WHO: Charleston Restaurant Association, local restaurants, foodies
WHERE: Boone Hall Plantation, Gallery Row, Culinary Institute of Charleston
WHEN: Iron Chef is 6-9 p.m. Friday, Taste of the Arts on Gallery Row is 6-8 p.m. Saturday, main event is 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

The Highrollers bring it home with a bout against the Cape Fear Roller Girls from Wilmington, N.C. Then they have it out with each other to see who are the highest rollers of them all.
WHO: Swamp Foxes, Ashley Riverdolls, Holy City Heartbreakers — and those other girls from up North
WHERE: The Citadel's McAlister Field House
WHEN: Doors at 3 p.m. Saturday, bouts start at 4 p.m.
