| Age: 38 Owner, Blue Bicycle Books • Blue Bicycle Books is a bookstore, with a special emphasis on connecting with writers. Sanchez focuses on stocking really special used and rare books. He finds them, then researches, cleans, prices and markets them. He also organizes various events, including book signings. And he runs five week-long writing summer camps for children. Community involvement: • Program director of Poets in the Schools at Burke High School, a program started through LILA (Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts). • Leads writing workshops at Burke High School and assists with the Burke Literary Magazine. • Leads a monthly fiction workshop for adults at the public library. What is your professional goal? Make “paperless” a bad word. Most importantly: Have my kids hand over the bookstore to their children. What is your personal mission statement? Foster the ancient, exciting, thriving culture of books, writing and words. Who has inspired you or impacted your life and why? Marjory Wentworth , S.C. Poet Laureate. She’s a book publicist, poet and writing teacher. Our lives intersect constantly. It’s not uncommon for me to call her and ask advice or talk shop three times in a week, often about three unrelated issues: Maybe a poem or book one of us is working on, next an issue with a writing class or workshop, next an author event.
