After five days of intense lectures and examinations, McCrady’s beverage director Clint Sloan passed the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Advanced Exam, making him the third advanced sommelier in the state.

The exam was given Aug. 13 at the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State University. Sloan was one of 11 sommeliers out of 33 from across North America to pass the exam in this administration.

The Advanced Exam is the third in a series of four increasingly challenging tests of knowledge and skill offered by the court and is designed to distinguish those candidates with a superior understanding of wine theory and the beverage service industry, as well as a highly sophisticated tasting ability.

Successful passage of the fourth exam bestows the highest sommelier designation in the world, that of Master Sommelier. Of thousands of people who enroll in the court’s educational programs each year, 105 individuals in North America and 170 worldwide have earned that title.

The complete list of candidates who earned the title of Advanced Sommelier at the recent Cincinnati exam include:

Brahm Callahan of Post 390 Restaurant, Boston.

Dilek Caner of Tasting World, Dallas.

Daniel Cobian of The Breakers, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Jared Fischer of Le Bernardin, New York City.

Mary Horn of Wine Trends Inc., Cincinnati.

James Lechner of Bastille Cafe & Bar, Seattle.

Pascaline Lepeltier of Rouge Tomate, New York City.

Michael Shearin of Drago Centro, Los Angeles.

Clint Sloan of McCrady’s Restaurant, Charleston.

Luke Wohlers, Seattle.

Daniel Jake Young of Chas Rothmann’s Steakhouse, Miller Place, N.Y.

Sloan has been a semifinalist in the Southeast Region Young Sommelier Competition in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009.
