S.C. DOT Commission gets new chairman, vice chairman

Henry Taylor SCDOT Henry H. Taylor (pictured, top) of Lexington has replaced the outgoing chairman, F. Hugh Atkins of Spartanburg, on the S.C. Department of Transportation Commission.

Atkins (pictured, center), who stepped down on Thursday, has represented the 4th Congressional District as an S.C. DOT commissioner since 2006 and was first elected chairman in June 2008. 

Since Taylor had been serving as vice chairman, he automatically became chairman when Atkins stepped down. Atkins’ term would have expired in February.

F. Hugh AtkinsThe commission unanimously elected 6th Congressional District Commissioner Marvin Stevenson to fill Taylor’s position as vice chairman.

Taylor has represented the 2nd Congressional District on the S.C. DOT Commission since March 2007. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, and he graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina’s School of Law.

Stevenson (pictured, bottom), a former chairman of Marion County Council, received his bachelor of arts degree in social studies from Allen University in 1961.  He pursued graduate work at S.C.  State College in Orangeburg.

Stevenson served as a social studies teacher for 24 years and became the attendance supervisor of Marion County Schools in 1985.
