The College of Charleston, in partnership with local company City Slicker, has developed an iPhone application for a self-guided campus tour, the first of its kind for colleges.
The free application for the iPhone and iPod Touch has GPS assistance, 18 campus videos and about 60 images of campus life. It’s titled the “College of Charleston Tour” and is available at the Apple iTunes app store.
“This innovative application will allow us to connect with prospective students around the globe and to showcase our historic campus using the latest in digital media and mobile technology,” said CofC President George Benson.
City Slicker helped develop the application, which also developed a similar application for a self-guided walking tour of Charleston. It was the first city tour for the iPhone and was selected as a Staff Favorite by Apple.
“We give prospective students and their families intuitive, convenient tools to enrich and facilitate the college selection process,” said City Slicker CEO Tommy Dew, a CofC graduate. “As a College alumnus, it is especially gratifying to provide technology that helps to differentiate my alma mater.”
Through the application, viewers have the chance to meet CofC students and look inside almost every building on campus.
“Students are already coming to the College of Charleston from as far away as Singapore,” said Jimmie Foster, CofC director of freshmen admissions. “We’ll be able to reach dramatically more students than we do using traditional admissions tactics. And students who see the College of Charleston often make it their top choice.”
