The S.C. Farm Bureau Federation has announced a new specialty license plate that promotes agriculture with the slogan “Our Farms – Our Future.” Proceeds from the sale of the tag will go to the group’s Ag in the Classroom fund.

Plate The “Our Farms – Our Future” plate is among the first issued through the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles digital “on-demand” process, which means the plates are not available in S.C. DMV field offices. Instead, the plates will be printed and mailed as vehicle owners place orders.

According to S.C. Farm Bureau President David Winkles, the specialty plate did not meet state requirements for a nonprofit license tag, and the organization sought the help of the chairmen of the General Assembly’s agriculture committees, Sen. Danny Verdin and Rep. Jeff Duncan, both of Laurens County.

“Each of these legislators recognized the value of promoting South Carolina agriculture and worked enabling legislation through their respective chambers,” Winkles said. “They also led efforts to override a gubernatorial veto of the legislation during the 2009 session. I hope every vehicle owner will consider purchasing a ‘Our Farms – Our Future’ plate to help us promote the value of farmers and domestically grown food, fiber and fuel to young people across the state.”

The fee for the specialty “Our Farms – Our Future” plate is $70 every two years, in addition to the regular motor vehicle registration fee. Interested customers may place their license plate orders by mail or at any S.C. DMV field office on form MV-95.

The Ag in the Classroom fund helps sustain Farm Bureau’s efforts to equip teachers with tools to teach S.C. children in grades pre-K through 8 about family farmers and the food, fiber and fuel they produce.

The plate features the prefix AG, a big red barn, a green field and a bright yellow sun. The design concept and slogan was selected by Farm Bureau members and was designed by Farm Bureau art director Bill Johns.
