Two more Upstate companies will be involved in building the Boeing airplane factory in North Charleston, officials said Friday.

Global Performance LLC, has been selected by Boeing Co. to provide project and construction management services for the Chicago-based aircraft maker’s new 787 assembly facility in North Charleston.

And CMC South Carolina Steel, which has facilities in Cayce, has been chosen to design, fabricate and build the structural steel for the new plant.

CMC expects five of its units in South Carolina to be involved in supplying the Boeing project. Some of the design and fabrication will be done in Greenville. The company expects to release more details on Monday.

The contract award to Global Performance follows Boeing’s selection of a Greenville-based construction team for the design-build contract for the new final assembly line for the Dreamliner.

The joint venture between Charlotte-based BE&K Building Group and Turner Construction, a New York firm, has enjoyed a long relationship with the aerospace manufacturer. BRPH, based in Melbourne, Fla., is the design partner selected for the new North Charleston plant. Both BRPH and BE&K have regional offices in Greenville. The BE&K Building Group’s South Carolina regional office in Greenville will serve as the headquarters for the BE&K/Turner/BRPH design-build team.

All three of the design/build companies worked on the original Dreamliner assembly and manufacturing facilities already in North Charleston – the former Vought Aircraft Industries plant and Global Aeronautica – which are on the same campus where the new assembly line will be located.

Global Performance will serve as the owner’s representative for the 1.1 million-square-foot final assembly plant.

Based in Greenville, Global Performance's responsibilities will include oversight of both the design and construction phase of this project, encompassing all phases of program management.

Groundbreaking for the new facility took place this morning in North Charleston. Production of the first locally made 787 Dreamliner is scheduled to begin in 2011, Global Performance said in its announcement. In addition to serving as a location for final assembly of up to five 787 Dreamliners per month, the facility also will have the capability to support the testing and delivery of the airplanes.

“We are pleased that Boeing has shown such confidence in choosing our team for this important project for the state of South Carolina,” said Dennis Braasch, president of Global Performance. “Global Performance brings strong construction management expertise and experience to this vitally important investment, and (we) are excited to serve Boeing as a member of their team.”

Global Performance said it has performed similar services on projects in South Carolina and worldwide, including the $750 million, 1.5 million-square-foot expansion that is nearing completion at BMW Manufacturing Co. near Greer.
