A Charleston defense contractor has been awarded a contract worth nearly $24 million that includes options that could eventually be worth almost $234 million.

The Charleston location of BAE Systems Technology Solutions and Services Inc., based in Rockville, Md., won the $23.7 million contract through SPAWAR. The company will provide the engineering, integration, testing, inspection and delivery of an integrated system or other equipment for tactical platforms and vehicles on land and at sea.

The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total value of the contract to $233.7 million. The work will be performed in Charleston and is expected to be completed by November 2010.

If the Department of Defense exercises all options, the deadline for the work could be extended until November 2017. The Department of Defense said the contract funds will not expire at the end of the fiscal year.

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic put out the contract for bid through the Federal Business Opportunities Web site and the SPAWAR e-commerce Web site.

SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic has 9,000 industry partners that perform a variety of defense-related technological services. A good number of those companies are in the Lowcountry.
