S.C. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has taken one step closer to announcing his candidacy for governor.

Cathy Novinger, chairwoman of the Bauer for Governor Finance Committee, announced that a bank account was opened for Andre Bauer for Governor.

“We deposited checks today and will immediately start the process of asking our previous donors to allow us to convert our deposits from the lieutenant governor account,” Novinger said.

Campaign consultant Chris LaCivita announced that the campaign would be organizing immediately. He said that he has filed the necessary paperwork with the S.C. Ethics Commission and that the formal announcement is forthcoming. LaCivita’s work garnered national attention in the 2004 presidential campaign, as he was chief strategist for the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads that targeted Democrat John Kerry.

In August, as the firestorm mounted over Gov. Mark Sanford’s use of state and private aircraft and the Ethics Commission’s investigation of the matter, Bauer offered not to run for governor if Sanford resigned. His reasoning was that lawmakers had not requested Sanford’s resignation only because it would elevate Bauer. Sanford rejected the offer.

Bauer was elected lieutenant governor in 2002, and is serving in his second term. He previously served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and the state Senate.
