The Citadel has been approved to offer the state’s only master’s degree in project management, with its first class to start in fall 2010.

The program is building off a technical management certificate program that The Citadel’s school of engineering developed two years ago for SPAWAR. After seeing the success of that program, The Citadel decided to expand to a master’s program.

The CitadelAlthough the master’s degree has a basis in engineering, technical and nontechnical students can earn the degree.

“This is a flexible degree that serves to meet the career and professional development needs of a broad spectrum of students,” said Dennis Fallon, dean of the engineering school. “From business to medicine to engineering, every discipline needs and uses project management.”

The program requires 30 credit-hours of classes, which will meet weekly at night. Students will take leadership courses, professional skills courses in areas including civil and electrical engineering, and other courses that focus on best practices for management of people and resources.

The expanded project management program is part of The Citadel’s focus on being a larger player in Charleston’s economic development, school officials said.

“This new degree program is The Citadel’s latest contribution to the economic development of South Carolina,” said Sam Hines, provost and dean of the college. “This program is about developing great bosses and success for our graduates.”
