The city of North Charleston is holding a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday about the possible closure of the U.S. post office on McMillan Avenue.

City officials will gather input and share information about the potential impact on the community. The meeting will be at St. Matthew Baptist Church at 2005 Reynolds Ave.

The Pinehaven post office at 2180 McMillan Ave. is on a list of post offices nationwide that the U.S. Postal Service is considering closing in the wake of financial losses. It is the only Charleston-area post office on the potential closure list.

As of early October, the Postal Service had reduced a preliminary list of 700 offices to 371. Elsewhere in the state, post offices still on the list are the Federal Station in Greenville, Pinewood in Spartanburg and Edgewood in Columbia.

The U.S. Postal Service has about 37,000 post offices nationwide.

The review that began this summer examined stations and branches in urban and suburban areas across the country. Officials are looking for facilities relatively close to identify potential consolidations.
