In order to compensate for a $6 million budget deficit, S.C. State University has proposed a budget reduction plan that includes furloughs and layoffs.
The plan was created by the administration and presented to the budget committee. It will go before the full board of trustees at its December meeting.
The savings are coming from a 10-day furlough for all employees between January and May. That is expected to save $1.4 million.
Other savings are coming from layoffs, including probationary employees, full-time equivalent employees, and regular and temporary retirees who have completed the Teacher and Employee Retention Incentive program.
To make up the rest, the university plans to dip into contingency funds and foundation funds as well as delay plans. It will use $1.5 million in stimulus money for scholarships.
Although the university raised tuition this summer, enrollment numbers were lower than projected, leaving a $4 million gap in funding. This was compounded by the reduction in state funding and a need to use more than the budgeted amount for scholarship and waivers to stabilize enrollment.
