A masterful maestro
CSO Conductor David StahlBeethoven is iconic, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra is showcasing him Saturday in its Heroic Beethoven Masterworks concert. Listen to works that form the backbone of orchestra repertoires everywhere, such as Piano Concerto No. 3 . College of Charleston artist-in-residence Sean Kennard will be lending his brilliance on piano. The performance is at 8 p.m. at Gaillard Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are $20-$60. Music at the Joe
Blues Traveler 1Shinefest is coming to Riley Park this Saturday. Local and national bands will be performing in this annual all-day musical benefit concert for Charleston County Schools and The Citadel Foundation. Headlining this year's lineup are Blues Traveler (pictured) and the Original Wailers. Joining them will be local and regional groups such as the Blue Dogs, Dangermuffin and Sol Driven Train. The music runs from noon to 9 p.m. A "children's universe" will have music, storytelling, crafts and other activities. Tickets are $40 before Oct. 16 and $45 the day of the event. VIP tickets are $100 and include food and an open bar all day.

Fall walk
The Upper King Design District is hosting its Fall Design Walk tonight. It kicks off at 5 p.m. with the grand opening of Seeking Indigo, a boutique and wellness center. The Cannon Elliot Lounge will have home and wedding displays by area shops including Magar Hatworks, Bella Bridesmaid, Croghan's Jewel Box and Mac & Murphy. Designers, architects, artists and authors will be making appearances at various shops, and restaurants including Fish, Halls Chophouse, Shine and La Fouchette will be cooking up specials. The Design Walk concludes at 8 p.m. with a performance by the Charleston Ballet Theatre, featuring costumes by Mary Porter. There is no charge to attend.

Race for the Cure
Race for the CureDon your running shoes and put on some pink for the 16th annual Race for the Cure this Saturday on Daniel Island. The 5K run and walk event has more than 6,000 participants raising money for the Lowcountry Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Late registration starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, a survivor celebration is at 8 a.m., the fun run and walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 9:10 a.m. Individual registration is $30. Bedtime movie
The much-anticipated film adaptation of the children's book Where the Wild Things Are is opening tonight at midnight. Cinebarre is throwing a pajama party for its screening on the lawn outside the theatre. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs and stretch out in your PJs with some popcorn and hot chocolate (Bailey's optional). Tickets are available online, at the Cinebarre box office or at the door for $10. Arrive at 11:30 p.m. to watch the screen inflate.

An Evening with the Stars
To celebrate its 30th birthday, Palmetto Goodwill is throwing an Evening with the Stars gala Friday evening at the Francis Marion Hotel. The night begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. and will continue with festivities that include a live and silent auction, live entertainment, heavy hors d'oeuvres and a fashion show. Tickets are $65 each or $120 per couple and can be purchased online or at the door. Proceeds will go toward the provision of job training and employment services through Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina.

Chamber concerts
BeethovenSeptetChamber Music Charleston is performing its first concert in the Classical Kids Series with a musical retelling of the classic story The Velveteen Rabbit. Chris Weatherhead will join a string section, clarinet, bassoon and horn in this performance. The concert is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Circular Congregational Church. Tickets are $10, $5 for children and no charge for kids younger than 3. Then, on Sunday, the chamber lifts a page from history for its concert inspired by the St. Cecelia Society. The chamber will play Beethoven's Septet for Winds and Strings in E-Flat Major. The concert, given in conjunction with the Preservation Society of Charleston, follows the Fall Tour of Homes and Gardens South Battery tour. After the concert, High Cotton will be serve a meal inspired by the piece's movements. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or by calling 843-763-4941.

For the kids
Kids get to be the center of attention Sunday at the annual Mount Pleasant Children's Day Festival. The town is pulling out all the kid-friendly stops with pony rides, laser tag, wall climbing, face painting and a petting zoo, among other activities. The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the Park West Recreation Complex. There is no charge to attend, and parking is complimentary. Willie NelsonAmerican icon
Country crooner and songwriter Willie Nelson will be in concert Friday at the North Charleston Coliseum. The native Texan has been writing and recording music for more than 50 years, and he has released two albums this year - Naked Willie in March and American Classic in August. Dog social
Bring out your canine pal to socialize with some fellow furred friends at Yappy Hour tonight at the dog park at James Island County Park. Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island: Oct. 19-25 at the Ralston Creek Course on Daniel Island. The purse for this tournament is $1 million, and the winning share is $180,000.
