BMW Manufacturing Co. said today that the carmaker will add two production shifts at its plant in Spartanburg County.
To support these additional shifts, BMW’s contract agencies, MAU Inc. and Tier One Solutions, will be hiring up to 700 workers, BMW said in a statement.
“BMW continues to guarantee our plant’s flexibility to efficiently respond to market demand,” said Josef Kerscher, president of BMW Manufacturing. “In order to meet customer demand, our plant must maintain its ability to adjust shifts and staffing levels as needed. The market is a roller coaster right now.”
As MAU and Tier One Solutions begin the hiring process, they will contact people who have previously worked at BMW to determine their ability to return to the plant, the company said.
BMW will add one shift immediately; another is scheduled for early November.
In 2008, the plant operated at 110 production hours. In 2009, as customer demand waned, the plant reduced its production hours to 80 hours per week. The first additional shift will increase the plant’s total production hours to 90, and the November shift will put the plant at operating 100 production hours per week.
“The additional shifts and temporary workers have been added as a direct result of an increase in year-end market demand for our products,” said Bobby Hitt, spokesman for BMW Manufacturing.
BMW Manufacturing is a subsidiary of BMW AG in Munich, Germany, and is the global producer of the BMW X5 sport activity vehicle and X6 sport activity coupe.
