Terracon Consultants Inc., an engineering consulting firm based in Kansas, has acquired North Charleston-based WPC Inc., a company that provides similar services.

WPC is one of three Southeastern engineering companies that Terracon acquired recently in an effort to expand its presence in the region. Terracon also bought Gallet & Associates Inc., headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., and Aquaterra Engineering, based in Baton Rouge, La.

WPC and the other two firms will retain their employees and names but will operate as part of Terracon.

Founded in 1993, WPC offers geotechnical engineering, construction inspection and materials testing, and environmental engineering. WPC has offices in Charlotte, Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach and Savannah in addition to its local headquarters. The company has more than 140 employees, according to Terracon.

Reg Christopher, president and CEO of WPC, was not available to comment on the acquisition Thursday.

“At WPC, we know the importance of listening, responsiveness and performance — qualities our clients have come to depend on from us,” Christopher said in a news release issued by Terracon. “We know together with Terracon we can continue to expand the high level of engineering expertise that exceeds expectations.”

The acquisitions give Terracon 35 offices serving North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. The company has more than 100 offices nationwide and 2,700 employees.

In South Carolina, Terracon already had offices in Columbia and Taylors, according to its Web site.

“We are excited that these three companies with the same goals have joined forces with Terracon,” said David Gaboury, president and CEO of Terracon, in the news release. “Their core business is the same as Terracon’s, and they each bring unique talents and capabilities that will be valuable in the region and nationally. This is a tremendous opportunity to benefit our employees, clients and the companies overall.”
