The Trident Surgery Center has earned certification in carpal tunnel surgery from the Joint Commission, marking the first facility in the country to earn this certification.

“This certification means Trident Surgery Center does the right things and does them well for carpal tunnel patients,” said Jean Range, executive director of disease-specific care certification for the Joint Commission.

The surgery center, part of Trident Health System, has been working for the past year to earn the certification. It underwent an on-site evaluation by Joint Commission reviewers and proved to have a full continuum of care as well as an education component on prevention of hand injuries, said Sherri Hill, registered nurse and risk manager for the surgery center.

Trident Health System orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jon DeVries, who championed the certification effort, performs most of the hand surgeries, along with Drs. Timothy Allen and Reginald Brooker.

The Joint Commission is an independent health care accrediting body that evaluates health care organizations and programs in the United States in various aspects of care.
