The governor signed an executive order establishing the S.C. Interagency Transportation Coordination Council. Its mission is to promote interagency cooperation and statewide coordination in order to cut costs and eliminate waste in current transportation programs.

The Mass Transit and Human Services Transportation Programs Study Committee had recommended creation of the council. The committee, formed by legislation in 2008, reported earlier this year that opportunities exist to improve transportation services provided by the state.

The S.C. Interagency Transportation Coordination Council will address such issues as synchronization of state government health services transportation programs and expansion of transportation services to underserved areas.

Sanford said he will appoint Bill McIlwain of Lexington to the council. McIlwain served at the state Department of Transportation for 42 years, including posts as statewide rail program manager, director of administration and director of finance. Other members will be named later.

The council will offer its recommendations publicly in quarterly reports.
