Green is good
The Charleston Green Fair has added even more to its repertoire in its second go-round. Friday is the Green Business Expo at the Francis Marion Hotel from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Green Fair is hosting Greenflix at the Visitor Center bus terminal downtown, showing The Botany of Desire at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $6 for students. The after party will take place in the same place and will include music, dancing and drinks. Then, on Sunday, the Green Fair will be open at Marion Square from noon to 6 p.m. Drink some Sweetwater beer, eat some food from local places, including Taco Boy, Rosebank Farms and Alluette's Cafe, browse the art selection as well as more than 100 other vendors who will be there. Walk a mile
This Saturday and Sunday, buy one pass and receive admission to the numerous museums and historical and cultural sites down Meeting Street as part of the inaugural Museum Mile Weekend. The $20 pass gets you into six museums (Charleston Museum, Gibbes Museum of Art, Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, Confederate Museum, among others), five historic homes (Aiken-Rhett house, Joseph Manigault house (pictured ), Nathaniel Russell house), as well as the Powder Magazine and the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. Select places will have special programming throughout the weekend, such as culinary tours at the Heyward-Washington house and children's crafts at the Charleston Museum. Dancin' in the streets
The 11-day MOJA Arts Festival kicks off today with an opening reception at the Charleston Museum from 6-8 p.m. tonight. There is no charge to attend. Other highlights this weekend include a comedy show, a discussion about art and race, and Gullah tours. A Caribbean street parade and opening ceremonies start at Marion Square at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and ends behind the U.S. Custom House on East Bay at the reggae block dance from 6:30 to 11 p.m. There is no charge to attend. On Saturday, enjoy An Evening of Jazz Under the Stars with Lalah Hathaway with the Charlton Singleton group opening. Tickets are $25. For more events and information, go online.
A night to remember
Enjoy a night out to benefit the Carolina Youth Development Center tonight at McCrady's. The center is hosting its sixth annual A Night for the Children Gala full of music and dancing, cocktails, heavy hors d'oeuvres as well as silent and live auctions. The night starts at 7 p.m. Up for auction includes a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings from Croghan's (pictured), a mountain getaway trip in the Smoky Mountains (cabin pictured) , and a signed photo of the Jonas Brothers. Run for it
Lace up those running shoes and make a run for it this Saturday for Carolina Children's Charity. The nonprofit is hosting an 8,000 meter (about 5 miles) run and a 2 mile Fun Walk starting from Hanahan Recreation Center behind Trident Tech. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with the run starting at 8:15 and the walk at 8:20 a.m. Registration for the run is $15 online on or before Sept. 25 and $20 the day of the run (includes a T-shirt). Registration for the walk is minimum $15 donation with a T-shirt for those who raise more than $50. There will also be kids' games, a jump castle, a dunking booth and other family activities. Open a door, close an exhibit
The Wish exhibit at Plum Elements is wrapping up this Sunday and the gallery is holding a closing reception tonight to open a few more doors. The mixed media and collage exhibit was created by Tina Hirsig, an arts teacher. Tonight from 5 to 7:30 p.m., join the artist as she opens doors to a discussion about what's happening in education and art. Pearl boutique in Mount Pleasant is celebrating its opening with a party tonight. Listen to Quentin Baxter and Gradual Lean as you shop and enjoy wine from Muse restaurant and hors d'oeuvres from Landgon's. The boutique stocks unique designers like philosophy, doo.ri, Jason Wu (dress pictured), Habit, Temperley, among others. The party starts at 7 p.m. and goes until. Grey's goes big
All the drama and nail biting at Seattle Grace Hospital is returning for another season, and Cinebarre is hosting the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy on its big screen tonight. Settle into the seats, order a glass of wine and a Barbarella (pizza margherita), and watch the excitement unfold. The special two-hour episode starts at 9 p.m. tonight. Gullah tales
The Greater Park Circle Film Society has partnered with Metanoia for a special screening of Daughters of the Dust this Saturday. The film, which won a Sundance Film Festival award for cinematography, tells the story of three generations of Gullah women on St. Helena Island. The movie starts at 7 p.m. at the Gussie Greene Community Center in North Charleston. It will be followed by a discussion on race, culture and class in the Lowcountry. Tickets are $2. The last shag
Even though summer is officially over, enjoy the season's last Moonlight Mixers' Shaggin' on the Pier event this Friday at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. From 7 to 11 p.m., boogie to some beach music and shag the night away. Food and drinks will be available from area restaurants. The rain date is Saturday.
