Choate Construction Co. has landed around $33 million in federal contracts in September, including an award this week to build dormitories at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter for $11.5 million.
“It is no secret that private-sector construction is very slow right now,” said Matt Brewer, Choate’s director of business development. “We are very fortunate to have been so successful in the federal market.”
The Shaw contract is Choate’s third award in the month of September, Brewer said. The project involves the demolition of two existing dormitories and building two new multi-level structures with 144-rooms at Shaw Air Force Base.
The project will be LEED Silver Certified, a federal green environmental standard, and is expected to be completed in spring 2011. The work at Shaw will be funded from the American Investment and Recovery Act. Brewer said projects funded by the federal stimulus has helped engineering, construction and architectural companies bridge the gap between private-sector jobs, which have been scarce across the country.
Brewer said for the dormitory project at Shaw, Choate has already received all bids from subcontractors and suppliers, but he encouraged companies that want to work with Choate to submit their information online. Choate has offices in Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Savannah and Mount Pleasant.
“We encourage any interested subcontractors and suppliers to complete a prequalification form so that they can be solicited for any upcoming opportunities with Choate,” Brewer said. “We always strive to receive the maximum participation from local firms.”
