Give peace a chance
Join the world Sunday in celebrating the International Day of Peace and Ceasefire. Charleston Peace One Day will hold its second annual festival , featuring education, art, music, sport and other peace-building initiatives, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Brittlebank Park. Hear music and poetry, see dance and art on display, and learn how to get involved with local nonprofits. Food and craft vendors will be on hand selling their wares. The festival will be powered by solar energy, and compost and recycling bins will take your waste. There's no charge for admission. ![]()
20 years a neighbor
East Cooper Community Outreach is celebrating the big 2-0. To ring in two decades of neighborly service, the group is throwing a Hurricane Party from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Omar Shrine Temple in Mount Pleasant. Party the night away with an open bar, including hurricanes, food from Cru Catering, a live and silent auction, and dancing to the Mighty Kicks. Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 at the door. Plaid plantation
Don some plaid and head out to Boone Hall Plantation for the 38th annual Scottish Games & Highland Gathering from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The day includes everything Scottish, including more than 25 bagpipe bands, highland dancing, Celtic bands in kilts, a border collie demonstration and Olympic-style sporting events and wrestling. Scottish food and merchandise will be for sale. Advance tickets are $15 and $4 for kids, and admission at the gate is $17 and $5 for kids. Coat envy
It's the last weekend to catch Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, presented by Charleston Stage at the Sottile Theatre. The classic musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice enchants audiences as it spans a variety of musical genres, including rock, pop and country. The stage version of this biblical tale tells a story of 12 brothers, jealousy and a colorful coat. It is playing tonight through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a final performance at 3 p.m. Sunday. High rolling
Catch the Lowcountry Highrollers in their final home bout of the season Sunday as they face off against the Little City Rollergirls from Johnson City, Tenn. The Highrollers have teamed up with Fight Like a Girl and the Lowcountry chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and will donate a portion of proceeds to benefit cancer research. Halftime entertainment will be provided by Steve Hit Mike . The bout is at The Citadel's McAlister Field House. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the bout starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Wear a significant amount of pink and get $2 off the door price. Music in the square Peruse the shops, dip into dinner somewhere or just enjoy the music at the Third Thursday from 5 to 8 tonight in downtown Summerville. The Cobblestone Jazz Trio, comprising Summerville guitarist David Archer, upright bass player David Keller and saxophonist George Kenny, will be playing in the square, featuring selections from a repertoire full of Sinatra, Ellington and others. Shops and businesses will stay open late, and Art Central on Short Central Avenue will be hosting an art walk. Third Thursdays is hosted by Summerville D.R.E.A.M. There is no charge to attend.
Scene it
Artist James Pratt travels all over the world, capturing images of outdoor scenes such as marketplaces, village streets and seaports. He then uses his palette knife to create thin and ridged texture with paint, bringing a sense of movement and light to his artwork. His paintings are on display until Oct. 14 in the Art Institute of Charleston gallery at 24 N. Market St., and the Art Institute is hosting an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the gallery. There is no charge to attend. ![]()
Pressure cooker
Eye Level Art will be taking 20 local artists, locking them in a box (a studio) for a night and opening the next day to see what was created. The Artist Lock-in is Friday to Saturday night. The artists, including Julio Cotto, Joanna Jackson, Hirona Matsuda and Heather Koonse, will be under house arrest at the gallery from Friday night to Saturday afternoon, where they will be left to interact and inspire. Friday Family Fest
The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry is hosting its next Family Fest from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Bring the whole family for a night of fun activities at the museum, plus complimentary dinner provided by Chick-fil-A. The first 150 families will receive a fall-themed book and a pass for a return visit to the museum. There will be bluegrass music, arts and crafts and a firetruck from the city of Charleston Fire Department for kids to explore. There is no charge to attend the event, which is co-hosted by the Junior League of Charleston. ![]()
Last drops of summer
Get outside and soak up the last summer weekend before the official start of fall (it comes Tuesday). The Shaggin' on the Cooper series is bringing the Ocean Drive Party Band to the Mount Pleasant Pier on Saturday. If reggae's more your style, head up to the Reggae Nights concert series Saturday at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park. Ever-G from Hanover, Jamaica, will be playing. Premiere time: Cinebarre is bringing a small screen show - the two-hour Grey's Anatomy season premiere - to the silver screen at 9 p.m. Sept. 24. There's no charge to watch; food and drinks will be available for purchase as usual.
MOJA Arts Festival: Sept. 24-Oct. 4. The festival boasts a variety of cultural events, including dance, music, theater, visual arts and literary arts. Ticket prices vary; no charge for many events.
Fall Festival: Oct. 2-4 at Freshfields Village. Welcome fall with a weekend of oyster roasts, bluegrass music and art.
Special Olympics Gala: 7-10 p.m. Oct. 24 at Blackbaud Stadium.
