David Pankau has been promoted to the post of president and chief operating officer at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. The title of COO is a new one for BlueCross BlueShield, company spokeswoman Elizabeth Hammond said. His new duties took effect Aug. 1.
He reports directly to CEO and Chairman Ed Sellers.
Pankau oversees many of the company’s insurance-writing subsidiaries including the BlueCross BlueShield division over which he used to preside, Hammond said. He also oversees the Companion Group of companies, which provide life, property and casualty and captive insurance. And he has oversight of core support functions such as information technology and the legal and communications departments, she said.
Pankau was worked at BlueCross since 1993. He has served as COO for the Companion Health Care division, and he had served as president of the BlueCross BlueShield division since 2007.
BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is the biggest player in health insurance in the state. It also is a major government contractor for claims processing, such as Medicare and Tricare. Headquartered in Columbia, it employs about 10,000 people.
