The Avondale Point Business District in West Ashley is seeking a brand for itself, and its latest effort is a mural competition.

Through Wednesday, residents can vote for a mural design that will be painted on the Children’s Cancer Society Thrift Store at 835 Savannah Highway. The winning mural will go on the store’s “thumb” — the architectural feature that rises above the surrounding buildings.

Murals by local artists are on display in storefronts throughout the shopping district. Artists were told to create a mural reflecting the offbeat, eclectic and modern vibe of the area.

Voting takes place at Alchemy Coffee, 11 Magnolia Road.

Community members can cast their final votes during the Avondale Point Art Walk from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. Shops will stay open late, and many will offer refreshments, discounts and additional artwork on display from the artists participating in the competition.

The winning design will be announced at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Voodoo Lounge, 15 Magnolia Road.

The business district, a consortium of businesses in the Avondale Point area, is sponsoring the contest in conjunction with the city of Charleston’s Business Services Division and Lowcountry Earth Force.

In July, the business district unveiled a sign with its name in front of Triangle Char & Bar, at the intersection of Magnolia Road and Savannah Highway.
