Well, I guess you can say we are in the summer doldrums. The tide has been right for a dawn patrol or an after-work session this week, but the swell has been so pitiful that I’ve not bothered to go check it. That, plus the pattern of afternoon thunderstorms has made it pretty dodgy. Burbo and I got desperate enough Sunday afternoon to paddle out in the microsurf, but as soon as we got wet, lightning started cracking a little too close for comfort, so we evacuated. I might risk being fried for overhead glass, but I’m surely not going down in the annals of surfing as the idiot who challenged electricity for knee-high mushburgers.

So what’s a guy to do? It’s really a bit too hot to enjoy any kind of outdoor activity that doesn’t include water. Almost makes me take seriously the constant lobbying I get from the kiteboarders. They do have a point. There’s pretty much always some wind, and with enough speed, even knee-high junk can be fun. But I just don’t know. If I could already do it and owned all the stuff, I’d be on it. But I just don’t want to invest the money and body parts to learn. Same with stand-up paddle boards. Basically, any board that needs a handle in the deck to be carried transcends the recreational value. If I want to carry heavy stuff around, I just need to hang out with Mrs. Blog long enough and she’ll find something.

One thing’s for sure: I take back all that carping I did about being slave labor in Mrs. Blog’s garden back in the spring. With all the rain we’ve had, even I have to admit it looks pretty nice in full bloom. Makes me realize how bad the summer droughts have been in recent years when I see what things look like with a more normal rain pattern. So, instead of surfing, I’m condemned to just sit in the garden and smell the flowers like Ferdinand the Bull.

Weekend surf looks to be small, but rideable. I write this on Wednesday evening, so things can change by Saturday. But right now, it looks like there might be a small swell with a long period reaching us by late Friday and into Saturday. It won’t be big, but perhaps the long swell period will give it enough push to make it rideable. So wax up your longest board and hit it after work on Friday and dawn patrol it on Saturday. Maybe we’ll get lucky.
