The Summerville Family YMCA and The Ponds Conservancy will host a youth triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The event will take place within The Ponds development and will include a swimming leg, biking leg and a running leg. The course will take participants around the development, in the pool and both on roads and trails.
Distances for ages 7-10 are: 100 meter swim, 2.5 mile bike and 0.5 mile run. Distances for ages 11-14 will double.
“We want to really encourage area youth to come out and try something new. We are excited that there is nothing similar to this in the area,” said Robbie Smith, YMCA at The Ponds Health & Wellness Director. “We hope to have a great turnout.”
Registration forms may be picked up at any YMCA location or they may be downloaded from the Y’s Web site. Fees to enter are $15 prior to Aug. 8 and $20 after that date. Registrations will be capped at 150 participants.
The YMCA is looking for sponsors and volunteers to assist with the event. Please contact Linda Walton for more information: 871-9622 ext. 119.

Atlanta Falcons fullback Ovie Mughelli is hosting his Fourth Annual Free Football Clinic July 17 and 18 at Garrett High School in North Charleston.
In addition to working with students 8 to 17 on various drills and skills improvement that will help them on the field, the camp also will feature an environmental theme, “Our Future is Green.”
“Children and their developments have always fascinated me, and the earth they will inherit from us is important to me,” Mughelli said. “I wish the children, irrespective of their economic or social backgrounds, to walk away with a wealth of information that will improve their lives.”
The clinic is offered through the Ovie Mughelli Foundation.
Mughelli has partnered with eco-crusader, Lauren Turner, on various projects, making environmental issues a large part of his community outreach. He also participated in the 2009 Go Green Expo in Atlanta.
At this year's camp, recycling will be strongly encouraged. Bins will be conveniently located throughout the space, the use of plastics will be limited, and reusable containers will be distributed.
Furthermore, students will be given organic branded T-shirts to wear and their gift bags will be loaded with eco-friendly products. Mughelli also will be working with the kids to focus on everyday ways they can help save their environment. There will be games, such as “Environmental Jeopardy,” and seminars that focus on green living.
