07/02/09

Listen, I was up in Minnesota at a business conference all last week and didn’t get back until Sunday, so any hopes of getting a decent surf recap out of me are wasted. I heard there were fun sessions to be had, but I’m never sure if it’s just the bros using my absence as an excuse to make me suffer. Vinnie called me from up in Buxton, N.C., and reported head-high perfection for a couple of days. I do believe that report, given the source, but haven’t seen the ocean myself for a while. I did see the Mississippi River, which was pretty cool – more so because I had no idea it ran through Minneapolis. No offense, but if you live anywhere that doesn’t have a surfable coast, you’re off my geographic radar.

And that’s not unusual. It’s why surfers make good meteorologists, geographers, cartographers, marine biologists, etc. No lack of motivation there. The wildest swing at this was Little Red telling me he had studied French all those years on the off chance that he could go surf the Basque coast when he got out of school. Poor deluded soul. Now that he has two baby daughters, the closest to surf he’ll get involves a rubber duck and a box of Mr. Bubble.

Since I was well inland all last week, I didn’t get to write about the weekend before, so I’ll give a quick update on the ESA contest. The waves were tiny, but perfect, and it was again a time for the Menehunes to shine. What is knee-high to us is about chest-high on them, and the grommets put on another good show. The future of local surfing looks bright. Wish I was 10 again.

I also want to give a shout-out to Todd Brazell. I was lucky enough to make it into the shortboard finals and surfed with Todd in my heat. He got hit by a stingray barb right between his toes at the start of the heat and surfed the whole heat in incredible pain. None of the rest of us knew about it until the heat was over and we saw him limping out of the water. The waves were tiny and he had a bleeding hole in his foot. Tell me the competition isn’t fierce. He got second. That’s the kind of maniacs that surf around here. Way to go, Todd, you’re my new hero.

As for this weekend, Saturday looks a little confused, but on Sunday, it looks like the arrows are pointing in our direction and the swell period gets a little longer. So I’m going to go out on a limb and say you should plan on a morning session and an afternoon session on Sunday with it being waist-high or better. The tide is high on Sunday in the 7 o’clock range, so figure that into your plans. And don’t step on any stingrays.
