From the farm to the plate
course 023Take your time and enjoy a picnic from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Slow Food Charleston is hosting a country-style Farm to Plate Picnic at Thackeray Farms on Harts Bluff Road on Wadmalaw Island. Bring your own food, beverages and blankets or chairs. Local farmer Shawn Thackeray and Rita's Roots owner Rita Bachmann will lead tours of the farm, and Slow Food Charleston board member Holly Herrick will be signing copies of her newly released cookbook, Southern Farmers Market Cookbook. A portion of the proceeds from sales will benefit Slow Food Charleston's organic garden project at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School. Cost is $10 for Slow Food members, $20 for nonmembers. Barbecue and bluegrass for a cause
Lowcountry folks are known for loving good barbecue, dancing to bluegrass tunes and generously lending a hand. Charleston Habitat for Humanity plans to combine all three on Sunday to raise funds for a new construction truck at the third annual Pig-N-Pluck at Bowens Island. The event runs from 3-8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and include barbecue from Home Team BBQ, live bluegrass from the Blue Stone Ramblers and three drink tickets. Ages 13-20 cost $12, and children 12 and younger are free. Call 722-7145, send an e-mail or stop by the ReStore at 731 Meeting St. Tickets can also be purchased at the event.

 

 

 

SandinistasThe Farm is calling
The Music Farm is still the place to catch concerts from national and local acts. Tonight, "The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience," Zoso, takes the stage. Doors are at 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $12. On Friday, Sandinistas present Charleston Calling, The Clash's classic London Calling album live. Tickets are $10, and doors open at 9 p.m. On Saturday, Your Favorite Scene, with At Last Glance, Erison and Deborah Hudson will be performing. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $7. The Music Farm is at 32 Ann St. in downtown Charleston.

Jerry SeinfeldHave a laugh
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will take the stage at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center on Friday at 7 p.m. See the man who made a living on a TV comedy series about nothing. Tickets are $76, $61 and $46, plus fees. Buy them online. The performing arts center is at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston.

Tall ships are coming
Ships from all over the world are descending on Charleston Harbor for Harbor Fest 2009 . The festival offers a variety of family friendly events, including wooden boats, pirates giving their best "Argh" and interactive educational exhibits. Take a sailing lesson, build a boat, tour the ships and enjoy the waterfront. If you're feeling adventurous, join the crew of one of the ships and sail north to Boston. Hop from ship to ship 8-11 p.m. Friday at the International Tall Ships Soiree, or check out tunes from local favorites the Blue Dogs and Plane Jane at the first-ever Harborpalooza, from 6-10 p.m. Saturday. Festival tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of. For ages 6-17, tickets are $5 in advance and $10 the day of; there's no charge for ages 5 and younger. Special event ticket prices vary.

 

Moonlight MixerDancing in the moonlight
Shag the night away Friday at the Folly Beach fishing pier, with DJ Rob Duren spinning the hottest oldies and beach music. The next Moonlight Mixer, from 7 to 11 p.m., will feature food, snacks and dancing. No refunds or exchanges are available. Only 600 tickets will be sold. Buy them online, in person or by phone. Rain date is Saturday.

Boone Hall and beach music
Beach music goes with South Carolina's coast like bread and butter, pork and beans... you get the picture. The oak trees at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant will provide the backdrop for a dose of nostalgia Saturday with the inaugural Boone Hall Beach Blast. The first event in the Boone Hall Summer Concert Series will feature a giant dance floor to shag the night away. Headliners are Charles Pope and The Original Tams, The Legends of Beach featuring Jackie Gore, Billy Scott and The Prophets, The SugarBees, and original Drifter Jeff Hall and his wife, Nature. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased online, or pay $25 at the gate. Bring a lawn chair and blanket. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. and performances begin at 4:30 p.m.

 

SCOTSHillbilly Rock
Get your rockabilly on Saturday night at Halligan's in West Ashley. Chapel Hill, N.C., "countrypolitan" band Southern Culture on the Skids (photo by Ron Keith) will bring its unique sound to the West Ashley bar, located at 3025 Ashley Town Center, Suite 201. Local garage rock band Hypnosquad opens the show. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show. Buy tickets online.

Tristan Restaurant is quickly becoming a hot spot for special events. Tristan's new event coordinator, Angie Colyer, and White Tuxedo Productions are partnering again to bring the first of a series of special events catering to the hip chic and artistically forward thinker: "YOLO - You only live once." The first event will take place Sunday and will feature a Midsummer Night's Dream theme. The restaurant will be transformed into a Shakespearean wonderland complete with living art, fairies, fashion, food and signature cocktails. Tickets start at $30.
