That's the goal of the Stone's Throw Dinner series at Jasmine Porch at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island. The event tonight starts at 6:30 p.m. with live music and hors d'oeuvres, and dinner begins at 7 p.m. Menu selections highlight ingredients from Caw Caw Creek, Rosebank Farms, Anson Mills and MiBek Farms, among others. Folly Beach's popular Taco Boy has branched out from the beach to the peninsula, where it has opened up shop on Huger and East Bay streets with a large outdoor patio and plenty of parking. On Sunday, it's partnering with Las Olas surf shop and to celebrate the summer solstice with a surfing documentary, The Present. The showing starts at sunset (around 7:10 p.m.), so kick back with a fish taco and a margarita and enjoy summer. There is no charge to attend.

Kiawah kayak

Kayak down the Kiawah
Put on your paddling gear and enjoy a kayaking trip Saturday with Friends of the Kiawah River. Meet at Mingo Point at 10 a.m. to take advantage of the current, and kayak down the Kiawah River and explore the wildlife with naturalists from the Kiawah nature center. Kayaks and life preservers will be provided, or you can bring your own. The paddle will finish up by 2 p.m. and conclude with lunch at Rosebank Farms on Johns Island. Summer Sailstice
Take advantage of the longest day of the year Sunday at Charleston Waterkeeper's Summer Sailstice. From 6 to 7 p.m., dig into some barbecue on the dock of the Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriots Point. Then board one of the group's sailboats or bring your own powerboat, sailboat or kayak and head out to join the flotilla and enjoy the sunset. Cost is $40 per person and benefits the Charleston Waterkeeper, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of Charleston's waterways. An equestrian Saturday
Head outside the city Saturday for an equestrian ride at Poplar Grove Plantation's first Rein and Shine Hunter Pace and Trail Ride. The fundraiser benefits Rein and Shine , a therapeutic riding center for people with disabilities. Start times will range between 8 a.m. and noon, and riders can choose between a four-mile short course or an 8- to 10-mile long course in two divisions, hunting pace and leisure pace. Cost is $45 in advance, $55 Saturday, $35 for those younger than 18 and $20 for those who are not riding. Cost includes a catered lunch and a refreshment stop. Shag the Night Away
Shag the Night AwayIf you haven't learned South Carolina's state dance or just want to brush up on your moves, head to Summerville's new Farringdon Bistropub restaurant for its Shag the Night Away party, Part 2. The restaurant hosted a Shag the Night Away party during the Spoleto Festival, and it was so successful, the pub is bringing it back. Carolina Shag DJ Richard Harris will be greasing the dance floor with favorite beach music. The party is from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Cover charge is $5. For more information, go online.

 

High notes
New Orleans Southern/punk rock band Cowboy Mouth will be playing at the Windjammer this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The first two nights are for ages 18 and older with doors at 9 p.m and the show at 10; tickets are $20. Sunday's show is all ages, and tickets are $15. That show starts around 7 p.m. Friday night at the Pour House on James Island, local band Emotive will be playing a James Brown Dance Party. The show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 at the door. Tickets for both bands' shows can be purchased online.

        A side of history
Fort MoultrieGet out to local historic sites this weekend and enjoy a little of the past for no entrance fees. The National Park Service is waiving fees to its national parks for three weekends this summer, and the first weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Use the opportunity to visit Fort Moultrie (pictured) on Sullivan's Island and Fort Sumter (though the $16 ferry charge still applies). Fort Moultrie, now part of the Fort Sumter National Monument, was the site of a Revolutionary War battle on June 28, 1776. The historic site is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, go online.

Tiger Shag
Charleston-area Tigers are invited to come out to the Charleston Clemson Club's Tiger Shag, taking place at 6 p.m. Saturday at JB Pivots Beach Club in West Ashley. For a $5 suggested donation, you can enjoy a barbecue buffet from Shane's Rib Shack and shag lessons at 7:30 p.m. Then shag 'til you drop. Wear orange and bring a friend.
