Calling the community “left-leaning,” a national lifestyle magazine has named North Charleston’s historic Park Circle as one of the nation’s “Coolest Neighborhoods.”
The honor in the June edition of Men’s Journal follows similar recognition of the Noisette community in Cottage Living in 2008 and Oak Terrace preserve in Green Builder Magazine in December.
“Left-leaning Park Circle in the north has long flown under the radar in the state, and, while development tends to change a place, its recent housing boom has left its liberalism intact,” Men’s Journal stated, mislabeling Park Circle under “Charleston” instead of “North Charleston.”
“Sure, there are lots of new residents, but they seem to have the same unique, character-driven, fun-loving attitudes as the pioneers,” the magazine went on to say.
The magazine, which has a readership of more than 675,000, focused on often-overlooked neighborhoods across the nation that serve as “enclaves that offer the best of both worlds — outdoor adventure and great homes — plus amenities such as amazing bars and bike shops.”
The Men’s Journal selection was largely based on the influx of artists and entrepreneurs relocating to Park Circle, and the Noisette community’s cutting-edge approach to sustainable urban renewal, the city said in a statement.
Park Circle was one of six neighborhoods picked in the Southeast, in a list that included West Asheville, N.C., and the Gulch in Nashville, Tenn.
Wenner Media’s Men’s Journal is a sister publication to Rolling Stone.
