Helping Out for April 22, 2009


Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. Submissions should be sent to dailyjournal@scbiznews.com.

The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis is holding an “Evening of the Enchanted Sea” benefit to raise money for the nonprofit organization from 6:30-11 p.m. on May 1 at the Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms.

Guests will enjoy delectable Lowcountry-inspired cuisine, signature cocktails from Firefly Vodka and premium bar by Southern Wine & Spirits SC, live music by Permanent Vacation and exciting drawing prizes. A Shag Dance contest will feature celebrity judges actress Catherine Bell (currently seen on Army Wives and formerly of JAG), WCBD’s chief meteorologist Rob Fowler and ABC4 News anchor Dean Stephens.

The proceeds from this event will support the ongoing research efforts at The Miami Project To Cure Paralysis.

Sponsors include Wild Dunes Resort, Firefly Vodka, Southern Wine & Spirits SC, Fisher Capital Corp. LLC, Citadel Alumni Football Association, First Command Financial Services, Spectra, Distinctive Events, Snyder Rentals, Soif and Holiday Souvenirs.

East Cooper Habitat for Humanity is holding its inaugural “Golf Tees to House Keys” golf outing April 28 at the Bulls Bay Golf Club.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch and on-course refreshments will be served. A cocktail reception with prizes and a raffle drawing will follow. Tickets are $250 per player and corporate sponsorships are available.

The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center will launch its 12th annual Golf Marathon on April 28 as part of its “I Believe…” campaign. Golfers will enjoy a day of fun by competing at 100 holes of golf at no cost, while helping abused children in our community at the same time.

The Golf Marathon will tee off at Patriots Point Golf Links in Mount Pleasant around 7 a.m. and conclude with an awards luncheon at 1 p.m. There is no entry fee and each golfer is encouraged to raise at least $2,500 in pledges to help support DNLCC. All funds generated from the marathon will help DNLCC to continue to make an impact on our community by providing a wide range of services to child abuse victims and their families in a safe, supportive, child-friendly environment. Laurentide Inc. is the title sponsor for the event.

Mellow Mushroom Mount Pleasant will host its inaugural “backyard bash” block party to benefit the Mikel Foundation, a nonprofit the helps kids with genetic disorders.

From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 2, the parking lot of the restaurant will be transformed into a children’s playground featuring monster slides and toddler jump castle. There also will be face painting and balloon makers. 

Adults will have their own party area equipped with a Budweiser Beer Truck all day with $3 Bud, Shock Top and American Ale draft beers. Cuervo Tequila and Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Vodka girls will be partying at the indoor and outdoor patio bars.

Music for the party will be performed by the Wando High Jazz Band, Larry David Project, and the Nashville Songwriters Tour.
