This was our fourth year recognizing the Health Care Heroes living and working in our community. And, for the fourth year, deciding to whom to give the awards was difficult.
There are so many people doing great work — many going unnoticed — in our medical community. We have tried to honor the best of the best in seven health care categories. We presented three awards in each category: The top award is the Health Care Hero, followed by two finalists.
In the following pages, you will read about the winners and learn what they have done in our community and beyond. Three judges independently scored nominations on a scale of one to 10 in seven categories: Community Outreach, Physician, Nurse, Volunteer, Health Care Professional, Health Care Researcher and First Responder.
The nominations were judged on the impact each individual or team had on an individual, the community and beyond. Judges also scored the nominations based on difficulty and challenges beyond the call of duty, as well as any unexpected sacrifices a nominee made or continues to make.
Thank you to our judges: Suzanne Bish of Hill-Rom; James Koren of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina; and Andy Owens of the Charleston Regional Business Journal.
We want to thank all the winners, and those nominated, for what they do for our community on a daily basis.
