The Charleston Horticultural Society named Jim Martin as the recipient of this years 1830 Award. The 1830 Award honors exemplary service and creative vision in the field of horticulture and is presented at the Horticultural Societys Annual Founders Day meeting. Martin joined the ranks of previous 1830 Award winners: author and lecturer Jan MacDougal, Rosarian Ruth Knopf, and author and botanist Richard Porcher.
Bishop Gadsden Chef Demal Mattson placed second at the 25th Annual Oyster Festival Recipe Contest. Mattson served up fried oysters with a pineapple glaze, finished with a tropical fruit salsa and garnished with a fried sweet potato.
W. Daniel Beaman, president of Cummings & McCrady Inc. architects, has earned the LEED accredited professional designation. LEED Professional Accreditation distinguishes individuals who understand and can interpret and apply the LEED Rating System to green building project certification.
Mobil Travel Guide bestowed the Mobil Five Star Award upon The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The Sanctuary is one of four new properties on the list of 41 North American and Mexican hotels, resorts and inns that will hold the Five Star distinction for 2008. Mobil also recognized The Sanctuarys spa with its separate Five Star rating for hotel spas, making it only the third spa to achieve this designation. The Sanctuary is one of two properties with separate hotel and spa Five Star ratings; the Mandarin Oriental in New York is the other.
For the fifth consecutive year, Mobil Travel Guide bestowed the Mobil Five-Star Award upon Woodlands Resort & Inn and The Dining Room at Woodlands. The Woodlands is one of three properties in North America to hold a Mobil Five Star rating for both lodging and dining. Also enjoying this distinction are the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco and the Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Va.
Dottie Karst has received the first ever Charleston Air Force Base Civic Volunteer of the Year award. Karst was selected for her efforts in support of the Charleston Air Force Base and the dedicated members of the 437th Airlift Wing.
Alicia Kinard of Artistic Design and Construction has achieved the title of Certified Master Builder from the Home Builders Association of South Carolina. Kincard joins two other builders in the Charleston area who have obtained the designation that helps homeowners identify exemplary builders who have a proven track record of stability, integrity and service to their buyers.

College of Charleston senior Jamilla Harper is the 2008 recipient of the Conrad Festa Student Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes a student who reaches out to the greater community with targeted efforts to address issues and needs, uses innovative strategies of civic engagement, enhances campus diversity and shows the ability to lead, inspire and engage other students. Harper received a $1,000 development award for use in enhancing her leadership and community building skills as well as a $500 donation in her name to an approved service program or organization.
East Cooper Regional Medical Center has received the United Premium Surgical Spine Specialty Center designation for 2007 to 2009. The designation means the hospital has met rigorous quality criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards and expert advice. The UnitedHealth Premium designations are based on detailed information about programmatic structure, patient care processes and clinical outcomes that are submitted by the hospital to UnitedHealthcare.
The ION Club, a year-round tennis and aquatics facility in Mount Pleasant, won the 2007 United States Tennis Associations South Carolina Member Club of the Year Award. The award is given to the club that offers adult and junior leagues with high participation and tennis programs for all ages and abilities.
Joyce Barrett, an adjunct faculty member in the College of Charlestons Department of Communication, will travel to Burkina Faso in March where she will work with advanced students in the Department of Journalism at the University of Ouagadougou. Barrett also will make presentations to several large audiences on government communication in crisis situations, and will collaborate with professors in the Department of Communications on the development of new course materials.
GenGreen has named Charleston Gas Light Inc. as the featured business on the GenGreen Network in South Carolina. GenGreen chose Charleston Gas Light for their efforts in green business practices and for their promotion of sustainable living through their Copper Gas and Electric lighting products.

Bill Jacques of American Inspection Service Inc. was installed as national secretary by the American Society of Home Inspectors for 2008 during the Inspection World Educational Conference in New Orleans. Jacques has 20 years experience performing home inspections.
The Home Builders Association of South Carolina has certified Thomas Bulwinkle of T. Bulwinkle Homes LLC as a certified master builder. Bulwinkle joins two other builders in the Charleston area who hold the designation. To become a master builder, applicants must be nominated by peers and satisfy review criteria, including customer service and satisfaction, financial stability, adherence to accepted building technology standards, governmental compliance, the completion of at least three major construction projects within the past two years to the satisfaction of the Master Builder committee and five years of experience in the homebuilding industry.

S.C. Speaker of the House Robert W. Harrell Jr. has appointed Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough partner Bobby Pearce to serve on the Research Centers of Excellence Review Board through Aug. 26, 2009. The board reviews and awards endowment funds for the senior research universities of South Carolina.
Circa 1886 has obtained the Mobil Four Star Award. Circa 1886 is one of four restaurants in South Carolina to make the list. The award, given by Mobil Travel Guide, requires restaurants to meet more than 250 criteria, including a facility inspection and service evaluation by a team of anonymous, expert inspectors.
The BJH Foundation for Senior Services has awarded 23 grants totaling more than $189,000 to help fund enrichment and training programs for Jewish seniors. One of the grant recipients is the Charleston Jewish Community Center. The center plans to use the BJH Foundation for Senior Services grant to fund its Mind, Body and Soul program which targets three areas that have a significant impact on a seniors ability to lead independent, healthy and satisfying lives.
For the second consecutive year, SRA International Inc., franchisor of Sanford Rose Associates executive search offices, has named the Charleston office of Sanford Rose Associates as one of the Top 10 Sanford Rose offices worldwide. The list ranks the top 10 offices based on annual revenue. The Charleston office ranks No. 5.
The College of Charlestons Division of Marketing and Communications won the Council for Advancement and Support of Education III Award of Excellence for the staff, employee and faculty newsletter, The Portico. The publication had to beat 16 other submissions from a wide range of large universities, colleges, secondary and primary private schools. It is now eligible for the Grand Award.
The Charleston Metro Sports Council has announced the winners of the Eighth Annual Sports Awards. For Sports Achievement Awards for Year 2007, the winners are: John Keener, restaurateur of Charleston Crab House, for Corporate Partner of the Year; Charleston Battery Soccer for Professional Sports Team of the Year; Charleston RiverDogs Baseball for Sports Promotion of the Year; Christopher Fallis, coach of the Wando High School Cross Country Boys, for High School Athletic Team of the Year; Jason Kepner, coach of the College of Charleston Volleyball Team, for Collegiate Athletic Team of the Year; The Charleston RiverDogs and Mitch Hilligoss for Professional Team Athlete of the Year; A.J. Green for High School Athlete of the Year; Coach Fred Jordan for Collegiate Achievement of the Year; Tami Dennis, coach of the Mount Pleasant Track Club, for Sports Club of the Year; Bridge Run 10K, Turkey Day Run 5K and Kiawah Island Marathon for Sports Events Leadership Awards; Cadet Emily Hill for Collegiate Athlete of the Year; Hugh Wilder for Amateur Athlete of the Year; Katelyn Dambaugh for Youth Athlete of the Year; and Janice Fetter and Cathy Nixon Heibel for Sports Ambassadors of the Year. The Top Metro Sports Moments Awards of the Year winners are: the College of Charleston Mens Basketball Team for Southern Conference Championship Finalist with record breaking accomplishments; Ginn Resorts and World Golf Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam for hosting the states first LPGA event; The Family Circle Tennis Center for transforming the facility into beach front property with more than 1,500 tons of sand to host the inaugural AVP Crocs Tour-Charleston Open; and The Citadel for celebrating 100 years of football and its 100th year with record-breaking performances. Lifetime Achievement Awards were won by Gary McJunkin, former director of the Cooper River Parks & Recreation Commission and commissioner of Dixie Youth Baseball; and Modie Risher, recognized as a diverse educator and coach during his career at Burke High School. The Photo Contest Winner was Dragon Boat Charleston for the photograph titled Teamwork.
