The Medical University of South Carolina was recognized for participating in an American Heart Association and American Stroke Association program called “Get With the Guidelines.” The program helps ensure that the care hospitals provide for coronary artery diseases, stroke and heart failure is aligned with the latest scientific guidelines.

Robert G. Parker, dean of Trident Technical College’s Business and Technology Division, was appointed to the MedErr board of directors. MedErr saves 92,000 lives a year by helping hospitals identify, prevent and reduce medical errors.

Vision Software Solutions, a developer of financial analysis software, is in the process of a nationwide product launch of its enhanced commercial loan software, “fisCAL,” which assists lenders at community banks, credit unions and other financial services organizations in lowering their risks by making better loan decisions.

ARINC Engineering Services LLC announced its Command Control Systems & Services operation in Charleston has been awarded a $400,000 task order to support software development and testing for Build 3 of the U.S. Navy’s Visual Information Display System.

Lowcountry native Nicole Seitz’s book, “The Spirit of Sweetgrass,” debuted in March.

Jerry Gazes, senior vice president of First Financial Holdings Inc. of North Charleston, has been named the 2007 Human Resources Professional of the Year by the S.C. Chamber of Commerce and the S.C. State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management. 

Obviouslee Marketing added Del Webb to its list of clients. Obviouslee Marketing will be providing marketing strategy, public relations and community relations for the company.

The South Carolina Association of Realtors awarded Judy Wolk, a Charleston area real estate instructor and law student, its Educator of the Year award. Wolk worked for the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors for 13 years, serving as the director of education and teaching a variety of property management courses. She served several terms in various offices in the Palmetto Real Estate Educators’ Association and as president of the Real Estate Educators’ Association.

Dorchester Interfaith Outreach Ministries elected Thomas H. Hart III of Summerville to its board of directors.

Mike Veeck, Charleston RiverDogs team president, will be the keynote speaker at the 13th annual Administrative Professionals Conference on April 25, sponsored by Trident Technical College’s Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development and the Charleston and Moncks Corner chapters of the International Association of Administrative Professionals.

Communities In Schools of the Charleston Area Inc. has announced plans to serve children at Memminger Elementary School in downtown and St. Stephen Middle School in Berkeley County. 

Stuart Barber of Goff-D’Antonio Associates received his Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, issued by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Frances R. Willis SPCA of Dorchester County elected new members for its board of directors and elected officers for 2007. Elected to the board were: Charlotte Allen, Sharon Atkinson, Amy Blevins, Cary Collins, Mark Eckels and Traci Rhoden. Susan Williams was elected to serve a second three-year term on the board. They join current board members Ann Baughman, B. Harrison Bell Jr., Liz Graham, Steve Jackson and Kevin Patrick. Elected officers included: Tiffany Provence, president; J.J. Messervy, vice president; Rodney Profit, first vice president; Holly Patterson, secretary; and Charlotte Allen, treasurer.

Jennifer Burton has been appointed as the new lifestyle director for Del Webb Charleston, an active adult community scheduled to open in the master-planned community of Cane Bay Plantation this summer.

Zaxby’s opened its first restaurant on James Island on Folly Beach Road. Tripp Clayton, Chap Johnston, Chip Johnston and Ben Johnston own the franchise.

General Wholesale Distributors awarded Smoak’s Comfort Control of Charleston with its Distinguished Dealer Award. The award is given to independent Trane dealers who operate their businesses in a manner to advance their reputation as a retailer of quality air conditioning and heating systems. In order to be considered for this award, a dealership must complete a program over the course of a year in which the company receives recognition for promoting the Trane brand throughout the dealership.

Bosch senior vice president and Charleston plant manager Mark Ruby spoke to MBA graduate students in Charleston Southern’s strategic planning and management class about the operational side of strategic planning.

Ella W. Richardson Fine Art Gallery awarded Chris Miller of the Charleston School of the Arts with the first place prize of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers Association’s area high school artist competition. Also, Ella W. Richardson Fine Art Gallery introduces two new artists, Elizabeth Pruitt and Hye Seong Yoon.

Shahid Law Office celebrated its 10th anniversary. A. Peter Shahid opened the firm in 1997 and has spent the past decade working with clients in the practice areas of criminal defense, family law and personal injury. He recently moved his practice to 15 State St.

In honor of National Parent Leadership Month, Parents Anonymous of South Carolina Inc. partnered with community organizations in the tri-county area to recognize 17 “parent leaders:” Linus Brown, Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina; Tim and Lori Hamilton, Francis R. Willis SPCA; Alma Lopez, Our Lady of Mercy Outreach; Mary Jo Lautier, Goose Creek High School; Bernita Dayse, Michael Dayse, Mary Williams and Annette Manigault, Malcolm C. Hursey Elementary School; Gwen Boyd, Linda Foster, Charmaine Townsend and Tanya Williams, Chicora Elementary School; Marzel Thomas, Garrett Academy of Technology; and Kim Odom, Alia Marks and Eugenia Singleton, Charleston County School District Title I Parenting and Family Literacy. National Parent Leadership Month was created to recognize the leadership of parents in their homes and communities, to educate the public about family strengthening and to encourage professionals, policymakers and other community members to create opportunities to partner with parents to address issues that affect children and families.

Dunleavy’s Pub, located on Sullivan’s Island, presented the Special Olympics of South Carolina with a check for $25,607, the net proceeds from its annual New Year’s Day Polar Plunge charity event. After accepting all donations, owner Bill Dunleavy and his staff led approximately 20,000 Lowcountry residents onto the frigid water off Sullivan’s Island near Station 22.

J.D. Smith Co. Inc. was awarded the 2007 Guildmaster with Distinction award by GuildQuality Inc., an independent customer satisfaction surveying firm serving a nationwide community of homebuilders and remodelers. The award recognizes building professionals who have lengthy track records of exceptional customer service.

Charleston clothier Pixie Lily was featured in the national e-newsletter Daily Candy. In an article titled “The Chic Shall Inherit the Earth,” Pixie Lily’s Heirloom Batiste Collection was featured as a “must have” item for spring layettes. 

Andra L. Watkins, principal of Positus Consulting LLC, served as featured speaker for FastTrac, an entrepreneurial training program hosted by the College of Charleston. Her talk focused on mistakes new businesses must avoid in determining overall business profitability and setting smart financial benchmarks.

Liollio Architecture was honored with a Design Citation Award for its work regarding the preservation of the Old Exchange and Provost Building at the American Institute of Architects South Carolina’s Design Awards Gala. The Old Exchange Building is considered one of the three most historically significant colonial buildings in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. 

Daniel Ravenel Real Estate joined the Sotheby’s International Realty network, providing the company with business support and worldwide marketing exposure to better serve its clients. The Charleston firm will now do business as Daniel Ravenel Sotheby’s International Realty. The Sotheby’s International Realty network has more than 7,200 sales associates located in more than 350 worldwide offices.

Cindy Koeper celebrated her 20th anniversary of employment with Hood & Selander CPAs, formerly R. Scott Hood, CPA. Koeper, currently the executive administrator of the firm, has been with the company since 1987.

Garry West, a resident of Seabrook Island, was elected president of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, Canada’s governing body of golf.

The Rob & Edd Radio Network has returned to Charleston on WCOO-FM, known as The Bridge 105.5. The show airs weekday mornings from 6-10 a.m. From 1990 to 1994, Rob Duren and Edd Salen hosted the show on local station 98 Rock.

Morelli Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. was recognized as the 2006 Carrier Carolinas dealer of the year. The award recognizes the Carrier dealer that out-performed all other dealers in North and South Carolina.

StrategicPartner Inc., a sales force development company with offices in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville, S.C., won the Pinnacle Award at the annual conference of the Sandler Sales Institute. The award acknowledges StrategicPartner’s performance during the previous year within the Sandler Sales Institute, a nationwide training organization dedicated to improving sales and sales management skills and providing continuous coaching, counseling and support for sales professionals.
