Bobby R. Creech Jr., a CPA with WebsterRogers LLP, was appointed to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy Strategic Initiatives Committee for 2007. Creech also was appointed by Gov. Mark Sanford to a term on the South Carolina Board of Accountancy. Creech is a partner in WebsterRogers’ Charleston office.

The Wentworth Mansion has attained a perfect score in two of the five categories of Condé Nast Traveler’s 2007 Gold List, a selection and ranking of the 700 best hotels, resorts and cruise lines in the world. Wentworth Mansion was one of only four properties in the United States to receive a perfect score for service, and one of only five U.S. hotels to receive a perfect score for rooms and accommodations. Charleston’s Harborview Inn received a perfect mark for location. The complete list can be found on Condé Nast Traveler’s Web site.

Dorchester County Habitat for Humanity has added Lyn Mettler, Jennifer Quattlebaum and Sandra Call Wilder to its public relations committee. They bring diverse backgrounds in public relations and communications experience to the committee.

The Charleston Trident Association of Realtors announced new officers and directors for the upcoming year: David Kent, president; Wil Riley, president-elect; Ralph Wetherell, vice president of administration; Ann Essig-Marconi, vice president of finance; Cyndy Burris, director for a three-year term; Herb Koger, director for a three-year term; and Rob Woodul, director for a three-year term. The 2007 MLS president, Kathy Rawers, and MLS vice president, Linda Witte, will also serve as ex-officio members on the board. Bill Harrison and Mike Rose were installed as president and vice president, respectively, of the commercial investment division. Both will serve as ex-officio board members.

Al Bradham, owner of Carpet Care Services and DisasterCare, was given the top Humanitarian Award at the national floor care industry’s Connections Convention and Trade Show. Bradham was nominated for the award by his employees.

San Juan Pools of Charleston received an Association of Pool and Spa Professionals gold medal for the Fiberglass Pool Category at the 2006 International Awards of Excellence competition.

Disaster Recovery Institute International certified Scott Cave as a Business Continuity Planner. Cave is a consultant for Lowcountry-based Atlantic Business Continuity Services. Continuity planning helps companies continue their operations in the event of a disruption.

Larry Barrett, president of Rental Property Management, retired at the end of 2006 after 37 years of employment with The Beach Co. Barrett will be presented with the National Affordable Housing Management Association’s Industry Statesman Award to honor his years of leadership and service to the association.

The Charleston Trident Association of Realtors presented Ruthie Smythe, owner of Lane & Smythe Real Estate, with its 2006 Realtor of the Year award during its annual holiday gala. The award recognizes Smythe’s local, state and national contributions to the community, real estate industry and the association.

The Trident Workforce Investment Board has announced the appointment of new members for the 2006–2007 year: Marlin Bodison, area director, S.C. Employment Security Commission; Lillie Caldwell, director of adult/community education, Berkeley County School District and Berkeley One-Stop Career Center; Tina Doscher, director of business development, Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union; Bill Milo, ERA Tides Realty and Charleston Management Consultants; and Sylvia Stevens, business liaison, Bamberg Job Corps Center.

East Cooper Regional Medical Center, through the Tenet Healthcare Foundation,  awarded a $25,000 grant to Hospice of Charleston. The grant supports the first hospice center in the Lowcountry, which opened to patients in June 2006.

Communities in Schools of the Charleston Area received a $6,000 competitive grant from the Bakker Family Fund in support of its mentoring initiative, which serves children in the greatest jeopardy of dropping out of school.

Professional Printers was a recent recipient of a PICA Award of Excellence in printing. The winning piece was a full-color brochure designed by Elizabeth Horton of Elizabeth Horton Design, a graphic design and consulting firm in Mount Pleasant.

Work Volf Consultants ranked high on its 2006 Open Ratings, an external review of past performance. Work Volf ranked between 95% and 99% in quality of the services, timeliness and follow-through, “being easy to do business with” and overall customer satisfaction.

The Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina has awarded a grant totaling $7,000 to Charleston-based Humanities Foundation. Awarded through the Community Foundation’s Open Grants program, the grant will help fund Humanities Foundation’s ShelterNet program, which provides emergency financial assistance to families and individuals who are in immediate danger of eviction from their homes or loss of essential utility service.

Charleston-based Planning the Globe announced the opening of its second regional sales office in Dallas; it opened its first regional office, in Las Vegas in October 2006. ConventionSouth magazine, an industry publication on meetings and events management, has recognized Planning the Globe for outstanding professionalism, creativity and dedication to event planning in 2006.

In acknowledgement of the achievements of Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley across three decades, the Urban Studies program at Trinity University has awarded him the 2007 Trinity Prize for Innovative Urban Governance.

The Family Circle Cup announced that 17-year-old Amy Buzhardt, a commercial design student at Lexington Technology Center in Lexington, won the fourth-annual Family Circle Cup T-shirt design contest.

Elaine J. Amella, tenured associate professor in the College of Nursing and a member of the College of Graduate Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina, has been elected by the Southern Nursing Research Society membership to serve a one-year term as president. The mission of the Southern Nursing Research Society is to advance and promote nursing research, as well as facilitate the career development of nurses and nursing students as researchers.

Laurie Herrington, CPA at Dixon Hughes, has earned the Certified Fraud Examiner designation. CFEs are knowledgeable in four areas critical to the fight against fraud: fraudulent financial transactions, criminology and ethics, legal elements of fraud and fraud investigation.

Mount Pleasant Mayor Harry M. Hallman, Public Services Chairman Kruger Smith and Mount Pleasant Pride Committee members Bob Glenn, Minnie Mayberry, Carolyn Yarbrough and Betty Gilbert presented Red Drum Chef Ben Berryhill with the city’s 2007 Civic Pride Award. The award is presented every two years to businesses that build or redesign their storefronts to improve the appearance of Mount Pleasant.

Windwood Farm Home for Children, a local residential treatment facility for at-risk boys ages 5-16, has received an $8,000 grant from the Coastal Community Foundation. The grant will help fund field trips on the 60-acre environmental education center’s property for local elementary and middle school children.

Jim Friar, Dorchester County economic developer, completed his fourth recertification with the International Economic Development Council as a Certified Economic Developer. The three-year recertification conducted by IEDC gauges and recognizes an economic developer’s personal and professional commitment to the practice of economic development in his or her service area.

Sgt. Louis Reed, Cpl. James Byrne, Cpl. Scott Ray and officers Charles James, Brendan Cooney and Justin Kniess of the Charleston Police Department received the Metro Exchange Club Police Officers of the Year awards. The awards are given for outstanding judgment and bravery in order to avoid any harm in a local armed robbery.

Garry West, a resident of Seabrook Island and member of the Seabrook Island Club, has been elected president of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, Canada’s governing body of golf.

Planning the Globe, owned and operated by Veronica Walsh, has been named a finalist for “Company of the Year” for the Stevie Awards for Women in Business. Finalists were chosen by business professionals worldwide during preliminary judging. Winners will be announced in March.

The American Red Cross, Carolina Lowcountry Chapter recently welcomed six local business and community leaders to its board of directors: Randall K. Benton, Southern Division sales manager, SCE&G; Jim Brogdon Jr., senior vice president, Santee Cooper; Col. Nicholas L. Desport, commander, Charleston Air Force Base; Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston, retired, United States Marine Corps; Sam Middleton, commander, VFW Post 7723; and Tomi Youngblood, retired from Roper St. Francis Healthcare. Mason Holland, a Red Cross board member and Benefitfocus.com’s chairman of the board, was named the chairman of the local chapter’s Heroes for Fire Victims campaign.

After having a 24th employee pass U.S. Green Building Council accreditation, LS3P Associates Ltd. now has more 10% of its total work force holding the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design designation for green design and building practices.

Travel + Leisure magazine has ranked the AAA Five Diamond Award-winning Wentworth Mansion among the world’s best hotels, as chosen by the magazine from readers’ selections in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards Survey.

Karen Abrams, a local real estate agent for Prudential Real Estate Affiliates, received a Prudential CARES Volunteer Grants Award of $250 for the Lowcountry Housing Trust Fund. Abrams dedicated 80 hours to the organization in 2005 as a member of the founding board of the trust. She served on the fundraising and policy committees, for which she wrote three grants, made numerous fundraising calls and helped to develop policy for grants the trust distributed.
