Andra L. Watkins, principal of Positus Consulting LLC, has been appointed to the S.C. Chamber of Commerces Small Business Committee for a one-year term. She will represent the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce.
South Carolina Realtors has named Wayne Poplin of Charleston as the 2007 Realtor of the Year. The award is given annually to a real estate agent in South Carolina who works to advance the real estate profession and who embodies the realtor spirit of high principles and faithfulness to the realtor code of ethics and who practices principles of good real estate.
The new officers of the South Carolina Chapter of the Federal Bar Association are Thomas P. Gressette Jr., president; Christie Varnado, president-elect; Kay West, vice president; Christy Ford Allen, treasurer; Hannah Metcalfe, secretary; and Nancy Bloodgood, national delegate. The 2007-2008 board members are the Honorable Margaret Seymour, E. Jeanne Howard, Sam Sammataro, Mia Maness, Thad Westbrook and Zandra Johnson.
Eleven students from Pinewood Preparatory School have been inducted into the International Thespian Society for their work during the 2006-07 school year. They are juniors Hayley All, Daniel Poaps, Stanley Cruse, Kyle Schultz, Emily Soyka, Blaise Bailey and Blake Wood; seniors Ashley Droste and Sandy Redzikowski; and Class of 2007 graduates Mallory Haupt and Elliot Hitchcock. Students completed more than 100 hours of work in the theater arts to qualify for induction.
Pinewood Preparatory School teachers Janet Zielke, Sarah Coyne and Cory Fuller have completed the South Carolina Independent School Association Teacher Institute, a two-day training program. Classroom discipline, classroom procedures, school politics, co-curricular activities, testing and grading, and communication with parents were among the topics covered. The South Carolina Independent School Association is a nonprofit, voluntary association of approximately 100 independent schools serving more than 37,000 teachers and students.
The South Carolina Independent School Association has recognized Pinewood Preparatory School faculty members Stephanie Hopper and Angie Ringley as Master Teachers.
Brad Waring, a partner in Nexsen Pruets Charleston office, has been appointed chairman of the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. Waring also is listed in Best Lawyers in America.
Angela Christa Bedell, a 2007 graduate of the Charleston County School of the Arts, has received a $2,000 scholarship from the Charleston Mens Chorus. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate of the School of the Arts who plans to pursue a degree in vocal music or choral conducting. Bedell will attend Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Carolina Youth Development Centers board of directors has elected new officers for its 2007-08 year. David G. Jennings, an attorney with Rosen Rosen & Hagood LLC, has been honored as the 2007 Ambassador for Economic Development for Charleston County. Jennings has been a key contributor to the areas tourism promotion, airport development and economic recruitment efforts.
Barbara Franklin, owner of Charleston-based Franklin & Associates, has been appointed to the 2008 advisory board of the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance, the national trade group for insurance companies that sell the product.

Ann K. Barrett of Disher Hamrick & Myers and Cindy Norton of Prudential Carolina Real Estate have received the Accredited Buyer Representation designation from the Real Estate Buyers Agent Council Inc. of the National Association of Realtors. Barrett and Norton join more than 32,000 real estate professionals in North America who have earned the ABR designation. All completed a course on buyer representation and on a buyer representation specialty.

Mary-Margaret Fitzhenry, Michael Wood and Dendy Engelman have been named to the Pinewood Preparatory School Board of Trustees.
Dorchester County, Charleston and North Charleston have received distributions from PalmettoPride, a statewide nonprofit anti-litter and beautification group. Under one of the groups programs, the PalmettoPride Tree Grant, Dorchester County received 70 crepe myrtles, 80 dogwoods, 10 red cedars and 15 river birches. The trees, between five and six feet tall and grown at the state Department of Corrections, will be planted in public spaces. Under the groups Keep South Carolina Beautiful Grant, the county also received $8,000 while Charleston received $7,225 and North Charleston received $7,000. The funds will be used to develop litter and waste reduction programs and beautification efforts.
