The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs has moved out of the Historic Dock Street Theatre and into a new space at 180 Meeting St.
Luis Melendez, who manages more than 20 McDonalds restaurants in Charleston, North Charleston, Goose Creek, Mount Pleasant and Walterboro, has been invited by President Bush to attend a White House celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event brings together select Latino business and community leaders from across the nation to recognize and celebrate the significant Latino American contributions to the United States.
Stephen D. Kirkland, tax and compensation consultant for Kirkland Thomas Watson & Dyches LLC, has become a certified forensic consultant. The certification represents Kirklands experience and training as an expert witness in U.S. Tax Court cases.
The Charleston County Aviation Authority reelected officers at its annual September meeting. The officers are David G. Jennings, chairman; George Patton Waters, vice chairman; the Rev. Edward A. McClain Jr., secretary; Thomas G. Botchie, treasurer; and Edie E. Carson, assistant treasurer.
State Rep. Annette D. Young, R-Summerville, received the 2007 Bert Cicenia Award at the recent annual Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour, which benefited Children In Crisis Inc. The award was established by the organization in 2003 to honor Dr. Erbert F. Cicenias dedication to the children of the Lowcountry. Young received the award in recognition of her 15-year career in the House of Representatives, where she has been a supporter of child welfare and protection.
Brig. Gen. J. Emory Mace was recently inducted into the Army Ranger Hall of Fame. Mace serves on the boards of the National Ranger Memorial Foundation and the South Carolina Federal Credit Union, and is president of the Palmetto Hunt Club II LLC.
The S.C. Womens Business Center has announced its advisory board for the 2007-2008 fiscal year. The board is comprised of 14 business leaders across the state representing a variety of economic sectors including manufacturing, banking, law, academics and small-business development. Board members from the Lowcountry include: Jo Anne Boone, board member, Colleton Improvement Collaborative; Evelyn Reis-Perry, president, Carolina Sound; Kimberley Sturgeon, assistant vice president of advancement, Trident Technical College; and Cushman Phillips, dean of industrial technology, Orangeburg Technical College.

State Rep. Wallace Scarborough, R-Charleston, senior vice president-secretary of Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Co., has been elected secretary-treasurer of the Association of South Carolina Life Insurance Companies. Scarborough, who represents District 115 in Charleston County, was elected to the state House of Representatives in November 2000.

The American College of the Building Arts announced new board appointments: Pierre Manigault, chair; John H. Williams, vice chair; Andrea Woodfield, secretary; and Susan Bass, treasurer. In addition, Robert L. Clement III was elected as a new member of the board of trustees.
Pinewood Preparatory School students Sandra Redzikowski and Brielle Weinstein have been named Commended Students in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top 5% of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The Mechanical Contractors Association of South Carolina and the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas were recently awarded a Career Cluster Partnership Grant of $150,000 from the S.C. Department of Education. Initiatives by the collaborative efforts of these leading industry associations and the state education department will be focused on the development of the next-generation work force and the identification of career opportunities in the states construction industry.

Orin F. Guidry, immediate past president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, was elected as an honorary member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland in September.
Trident Health System received the Gold Medal Award at the 2007 South Carolina Institutes for Healthcare Improvement 5 Million Lives Campaign Storyboard Contest in September.
The award was presented at the South Carolina Hospital AssociationSouth Carolina Medical AssociationTrustee, Administrator and Physician Conference in Hilton Head. Trident Health System placed first out of the 17 hospitals in South Carolina that participated. The storyboard illustrated how Trident Healths processes have increased quality outcomes for heart failure and heart attack patients by 15% and decreased the mortality rate by 4%.

Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, has been named the 2006 United States Affiliate of the Year for a service area with a population of less than 50,000. Habitat for Humanity International annually recognizes three U.S. affiliates out of 1,700 for outstanding achievement and consistent productivity over a three-year period.
After three years on Queen Street in the French Quarter, Ship Shapes Maritime Gallery has moved to the Aquarium Wharf. The gallery is now located at 360 Concord St.
Poogans Porch has received the 2007 Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine for the fourth consecutive year.
Stephen Herlong & Associates Inc. received a 2007 Design Award in the Residence category from the Charleston chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The company received the honor for its work on the Middleton Residence on Wadmalaw Island. The awards recognize individuals, organizations and projects for exemplary work in local architecture.

The Medical University of South Carolina has received the 2007-2008 Consumer Choice Award from the National Research Corp. Each year, the corporation honors hospitals that consumers rated as having the best quality and image. The MUSC Medical Center received its award for best overall quality, doctors, nurses and image in the Charleston area.
Cesar Palomar, supervisor at The Greenery Construction, has passed the Certified Landscape Technician exam offered through the Professional Landcare Network. Each candidate must have more than 4,000 hours of work in the landscape industry. Palomar becomes the fifth Greenery employee to achieve the accreditation.
