City reassigning municipal Wi-Fi contract

The city of Charleston will reassign the peninsula’s municipal wireless fidelity, or muni Wi-Fi, contract to another company, said Ernest Andrade, executive director of the Charleston Digital Corridor.

Andrade would not disclose the new company’s name.

Currently, Mount Pleasant-based Widespread Access has Charleston’s Wi-Fi contract.

The company taking over the contract is backed by a publicly traded company and has set up other municipal networks before, Andrade said.

All the business aspects have been “put to bed,” but the logistical details are still in the works, Andrade said. Additional meetings are planned to work out those details.

One factor leading to the switch in companies included the need for complete coverage of the peninsula, which Widespread Access was not able to provide.

Widespread Access created coverage over 30 to 40% of the peninsula, but obstacles remained with the increased need of access points and infrastructure development, Andrade said.

“What have we learned here?” Andrade asked. “We need to do things a little differently.”
