Synergy in development

One of SCRA’s activities is partnering with other research-based companies in developing their facilities.

For example, when Midlands Technical College wanted to develop 150 acres adjacent to its campus, it turned to SCRA to help guide the effort. The land will be the future home for technology companies that will have a relationship with the college.

SCRA provided a covenant and restrictions document to help direct the development.

The document includes definitions of IT infrastructure guides, building materials, campus layout, road widths and landscaping methods and materials. The document ensures that the land is used in an efficient manner that will draw the right kind of tenants to benefit the college’s mission of preparing the IT professional and technician work force.

“In our position as a not-for-profit entity, we can be the trusted agent for these companies,” said Bill Mahoney, SCRA’s CEO. “One of the reason we’re helping Midlands Tech is, first of all, we’re neighbors, and the more help we can be in developing the land that’s adjoining ours, the more value there is for everyone.

“But it also makes sense to do things like that. This will be the home for technology companies, and we’re in the business of helping drive the knowledge economy. It’s a synergistic relationship."
