Auction set for Al Parish’s ‘amazing’ collection

The auction of assets accumulated by former economist Al Parish during what authorities believe was a years-long buying binge with investors’ money will be July 13-14 at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston.

Parish, who has been released on $1 million bond pending his trial on charges of defrauding investors, acquired items ranging from guitars to watches to jewels to gnomes in connection with a “hard asset” investment pool he operated.

Many of these items, along with other personal property, will be available for sale at the auction, according to S. Gregory Hays, the court-appointed receiver for Dr. Albert E. Parish and affiliated entities.

“Our hope is to sell as many items as possible at the auction,” Hays said. “We believe the items for sale in North Charleston will be interesting and/or attractive to a lot of people, such as fine watches, collector pens and a broad collection of paintings.”

Estate & Business Auctioneers of Charleston will conduct the auction. Examples of the items for sale, which the auctioneer describes as “the most amazing, eclectic collection ever presented for auction in this area,” can be found online.

Among the items are clown paintings by the late comedian Red Skelton; fine watches by Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Piaget and Movado; a selection of Mont Blanc pens; original animation art from Disney Studios and Warner Brothers; paintings by artists such as Thom Biertz, Elizabeth Verner and Eva Makk; art glass and collector's glass by Frabel; and an array of fine household furnishings.

Due to security and other concerns, some of the most expensive items obtained by Parish will not be on display at the convention center, though photographs will be available. In addition, it is possible that private viewings of certain assets can be arranged for prospective purchasers who demonstrate both an interest and the financial capacity to acquire higher-end items.

Auction items will be available for inspection by the public at the following times: from 1-7 p.m. July 12; 9-11 a.m. July 13 and July 14. Bidders will also be able to register during these times. The July 13-14 auction begins at 11 a.m. and concludes at 6 p.m. both days.

Only registered bidders will be authorized to submit bids. A 13% “buyer’s premium” will be added to each successful bid price; however, this will be reduced to 10% for cash purchases. Purchased items will be available for pickup during the auction and from noon until 3 p.m. July 15.

A daily admission fee of $5 will be charged Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, a non-refundable $20 fee will charged to register as a bidder, but this fee will be applied to any purchases.
