Jon D. Tirpak, a program manager at the Advanced Technology Institute, was named trustee for ASM International, formerly known as the American Society of Metals. Founded in 1913, ASM International is the leading technical society for materials engineers and scientists.
Blue Ion, a Charleston-based interactive branding and design firm, won a Gold ADDY at the American Advertising Federations Regional ADDY Competition for the design of the Aherns Anvil flash-based Web site, www.ahernsanvil.com.
Tidelands Bank, a full-service bank serving the coast of South Carolina, relocated its Summerville branch from a temporary location to its permanent space at 1510 Old Trolley Road.
Quinn Williams Design, a Mount Pleasant interior design boutique, redesigned its Web site, www.quinnwilliamsde-sign.com. The companys newly refurbished and updated site features a user-friendly format with lots of color and design details.
The Citadel president Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was the commencement speaker at the Graduate School of the College of Charleston commencement ceremony and he was honored at a special reception hosted by the National Italian American foundation and the city of Charleston.
The Little Black Book, a free, word-of-mouth directory based in Charleston, was recognized by the national news and information source for franchise owners and operators, Franchise Times. In the April 2007 issue of the magazine, founding partners Sunny Gray and Jennifer Buddin shared the story of how they created the publication and expanded the brand to include seven franchises in eight territories.
The South Carolina Aquariums Sustainable Seafood Initiative named Middleton Place Restaurant its 2006 Partner of the Year. Middleton Place was selected from more than 70 restaurant partners for their outstanding dedication to serving and promoting sustainable and locally caught seafood. Four other SSI partners earned honorable mentions for their 2006 participation: Carolinas, Earth Fare, Blossom and Sea Island Grill. The Partner of the Year is determined by participation in Sustainable Seafood Initiative events and promotion of the aquariums SSI.

General agent Nick Gavalas, head of The South Carolina Agency in Mount Pleasant, a Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.s general agency, has earned the International Management Award from the General Agents and Managers Association for his 18th consecutive year. The award recognizes superior management of an agency and fulfillment of growth objectives. GAMA International is the only association dedicated to addressing the professional development needs of management in the insurance and financial services industry.
Palmetto Ideas, a Charleston-based promotional products and branding business, moved to a new warehouse on Amy Elsey Drive in West Ashley. The new facility will be the operational base, as well as the new storage site for Palmetto Ideas exclusive South Carolina-themed.
At the recent 2007 South Carolina Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America Mercury Awards, Rawle Murdy took home top awards for both of its two submissions to this years awards. Rawle Murdy was honored for work on behalf of the agencys Wild Dunes Resort and SunTrust Banks Inc. public relations campaigns. Each year, the SCPRSA Mercury Awards recognize excellent public relations programs, ad campaigns, publications, print materials and individual achievements in communications. In March 2007, the campaigns for both Wild Dunes Resort and SunTrust Bank also were chosen by PR News editors for the publications Top 100 Case Studies in Public Relations, an annual compilation of the best public relations campaigns of the year.
Jessica E. Munday, president and owner of Trio Solutions Inc., was named public relations chair for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Lowcountry affiliate. Munday has been actively involved with the Lowcountry Affiliate since 2002.
Charlestons Lee Edwards Entertainment was recently listed as one of the top music companies in the state by The Knot magazines Best of Weddings 2007. Only four music service companies in South Carolina received this distinction. More than 25,000 surveys were sent out nationwide to brides in 2006 asking them to rate their vendors.
Lawyers for Civil Justice elected David Dukes, managing partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, as president during its annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Lawyers for Civil Justice is a national coalition of defense trial lawyer organizations and corporations that seek to restore and maintain balance in the civil justice system. Dukes is the third Nelson Mullins attorney to hold the presidency, following partners Ed Mullins and Steve Morrison.
The American Society of Landscape Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation bestowed Charleston Waterfront Park with the 2007 Landmark Award. The award will be presented during the ASLA Annual Meeting, Oct.5-9, in San Francisco. The Landmark Award recognizes a distinguished landscape architecture project completed between 15 and 50 years ago that retains its original design integrity and contributes significantly to the public realm of the community in which it is located. Previous recipients include the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Golden Gate National Recreation Area near San Francisco, and the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia.
At the third annual U.S. Department of Homeland Security awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., ENVIROSmart was awarded a Small Business Achievement Award. The award was in honor of ENVIROSmarts outstanding performance for hazardous waste management services, provided to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers in Glynco, Ga., Cheltenham, Md., Artesia, N.M., and Charleston. Established in 2001, ENVIROSmart is a Charleston-based, woman-owned company that specializes in hazardous waste and environmental management.
Charleston area businesses and leaders were recognized for their achievements and contributions in the manufactured housing industry at the Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolinas statewide meeting in Charleston. Bob Tuttle, sales manager of Dixie-George Jones Homes of Moncks Corner, was named the 2007 South Carolina Manufactured Housing Retail Sales Person of the Year. Jensens Southern Palms of Ladson was named the 2007 S.C. Manufactured Housing Community of the Year. Dixie- George Jones Homes was honored as one of three 2007 Outstanding Manufactured Home Retail Sales Centers. Trailwood Manufactured Housing Community was honored as a 2007 Outstanding Manufactured Home Community.
Italys First Counselor and head of Economic, Commercial and Scientific Affairs Office, Stefano Beltrame, was in Charleston May 16 to be honored at the S.C. World Trade Centers Embassy Series.

Summerville Homes won four PRISM Awards from the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association. The awards recognize excellence in design, livability, marketing and sales, and are presented annually by the association.
Charleston engineering and environmental firm S&ME Inc. was recognized among the nations top such firms in 2007 rankings released by a national publication. The lists of top firms are compiled from annual revenue surveys conducted by Engineering News-Record magazine. S&ME placed 80th in the Top 100 Pure Design Firms (engineering companies that do not provide construction), up five spots from last year. S&ME was also 121st on the Top 500 Design Firms list, three higher than last years ranking. It was the companys 12th straight year on ENRs list.
At the joint conference of the North and South Carolina State Personnel Associations, Jack Beabout, sales representative for Dunhill Staffing Systems of Charleston, was selected as South Carolinas Rookie of the Year. Beabout who joined Dunhills staffing team in 2005 was selected because of the instrumental role he played in the successful start up and growth of Dunhills temp staffing division.
C.E. Williams School for the Creative and Scientific Arts took home the first place in the national Science Decathlon competition in Seattle. The team, lead by coaches Sadie Fox, Tyson McCormick and Kari Mynatt, won six second place honors and one third place finish earning them the highest score of all teams at the competition. Science decathlon is a national organization that allows students to learn different aspects of the scientific world and work on team-building skills. This is the first time that C.E. Williams has taken a first place overall finishgiving it the National Championship.
Jeremy Reid, who operates a Kirby Distributorship in Charleston, was recognized for earning a best month in business for outstanding sales under Kirbys Presidents Awards Program.
Regions Bank area executive J. Emory Ware will expand his leadership to include banks in the South Carolina and central and coastal Georgia footprint. This banking group includes Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Aiken, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head and Savannah, Ga.
