Grocery store donates to American Red Cross disaster fund

Piggly Wiggly recently donated $17,375.87 to the American Red Cross for the Disaster Relief Fund raised from donations by patrons at the supermarket chain in South Carolina and Georgia. Couple hosts fundraiser for victims of child abuse

Tradd and Weesie Newton, owners of Fleet Landing, hosted “Another Evening at Fleet Landing” to support The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center for the second consecutive year. Coastal Commercial Brokerage, Landmark South, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough and Wachovia sponsored the event. The event raised more than $141,000 for the nonprofit organization that helps children and families who have been victims of child abuse. Auction items included the Ultimate Girl’s Slumber Party at Wild Dunes, a rooftop cocktail party at the Gateway Center and a puppy, which alone fetched $44,700. Boy scout collects books for literacy organization

Adam Teseniar, a boy scout with Troop 484 on Charleston Air Force Base, collected 350 books for the Trident Literacy Association by putting out boxes at local Food Lion stores. The books were a part of the “Shine a Light on Literacy” book sale at the Jewish Community Center to raise funds to replace outdated educational materials with the most effective learning tools for adults. Mentoring program sponsored in local schools

Communities In Schools is sponsoring the Support Our Students initiative, a tutor/mentor program offered to local children who struggle with basic literacy skills. SOS is currently available at Jennie Moore, CC Blaney, James Island, Angel Oak, Orange Grove and Mitchell elementary schools. Pictured: Donnaven A. Seven Lowcountry agencies benefit from corporation’s gift

SPX, a global multi-industry corporation headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., recently provided the donation, shipping and delivery of 7,000 pounds of school supplies and 12,000 pounds of food to Lowcountry agencies. The seven agencies in the tri-country area distributing the supplies are Lil Owl, United Way’s Dorchester Service Center, Charleston County Communities In Schools, Our Lady of Mercy, South Santee Community Center, Good Neighbor Centers and Tricounty Family Ministries.

SCANA Corp. donates to Ronald McDonald House

The SCANA Corp. donated $18,000 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston through the company’s Summer Foundation Grant program. The contribution will be used to expand the local Ronald McDonald House from its current 12 guestrooms to 25. The expansion will also include a playroom for children, a TV room for adults and updates in the kitchen and laundry rooms.

The Citadel receives grant to update library

The Post and Courier Foundation has awarded The Citadel a five-year grant totaling $150,000 for the expansion of the Daniel Library. This gift is the first major commitment toward a proposed library renovation and expansion, a two-phase $15 million project that will modernize the current facility and enlarge it to house new programs such as The Citadel Leadership Center.

Real estate office gives to Easter Seals South Carolina

Century 21 Properties Plus presented Easter Seals South Carolina with a check for $20,545.95 to support its programs and services offered to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
